The Suoi Thia embankment project in Lao Cai province has a total investment of more than 4.2 billion VND, with a length of 300 meters, a structure of stone cages and 20 cm thick concrete. The project was just completed at the end of August, but before it could be accepted, it was seriously affected by the recent flood. About 150 meters of the embankment foundation was completely eroded, leading to cracks, breaks, and collapses on the surface. In addition, the Suoi Thia embankment system also collapsed at 3 other locations in Nam To and Na Duong residential groups, with a total length of more than 500 meters. The embankment break caused floodwaters to overflow, burying about 4 hectares of people's rice, causing an estimated loss of more than 23 billion VND, of which about 20 billion VND was damaged in irrigation and embankments.
Immediately after the incident, the local authorities promptly deployed response measures, prioritizing the safety of people's lives and evacuating households in the dangerous area to a safe place. The Cau Thia ward authorities said that the locality is requesting the Provincial People's Committee and relevant departments and branches to promptly organize inspection teams, assess the extent of damage and deploy plans to repair and reinforce the works to ensure long-term safety.
Currently, the relocation of people is only a temporary solution. In the long term, Lao Cai province will continue to direct specialized units to urgently fix the problem, ensure the safety of residential areas, and stabilize production and life for people in affected areas.
