Video : Residents and authorities discuss the effectiveness of installing verification scales to prevent shortchanging in markets.

Not located on any vendor's counter, the verification scale is placed in an easily visible location, bearing a verification seal and specific instructions for use, so that locals and tourists can conveniently check the weight of their goods after transactions.

Based on observations, the weighing stations are mainly located in areas with high transaction volumes such as the Red Column Market, the New Market, and many streets with a concentration of shops selling fresh and dried seafood.

At the Red Pillar Market area, within minutes, many tourists, after buying shrimp, crab, and squid, proactively brought their bags of goods to be weighed again. A group of tourists from Hanoi placed their bags of seafood on the scale while carefully watching the displayed number. When the result matched the weight announced by the vendors earlier, many people seemed more reassured before leaving the market.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hop (a customer) shared: “When traveling to the beach, many people worry about being shortchanged or overcharged. Now that I see certified scales placed right in the middle of the market, I feel much more at ease. At least customers have a tool to check for themselves, and if it's accurate, they trust the seller even more.”

Each weighing station publicly displays the hotline numbers of the ward police, market management force, and Sam Son Ward Public Service Center so that tourists can report any signs of commercial fraud or unreasonable price gouging.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Bac (in the blue shirt), the owner of a seafood shop in Sam Son, said that installing verification scales also helps businesses that operate honestly build trust with customers. "Initially, many sellers worried that customers bringing their goods to be weighed again would affect their business, but the reality is the opposite. When customers see that the scales are accurate, they feel more confident buying and return more often," Ms. Bac said.

To date, Sam Son ward has installed 7 verification scales and will continue to expand this to areas with high concentrations of tourists in the near future.

Mr. Le Vinh Quang, Team Leader of Market Management Team No. 2, said that publicly posting the hotline number of the authorities and installing verification scales aims to increase transparency in business operations and reduce the problem of under-weighing – a rather sensitive issue at popular coastal tourist destinations.

"All the scales are inspected according to regulations and placed in convenient locations for easy use by locals and tourists. This is also one of the solutions aimed at improving the image of Sam Son tourism in a more civilized and professional direction," Mr. Quang added.

Simultaneously, authorities are intensifying inspections of trading activities, handling commercial fraud, addressing improper price listing, and promoting civilized business practices among households.

In addition to tightening control over seafood trading, this year's tourist season in Sam Son ward has also seen a comprehensive crackdown on long-standing issues in the beach resort area. Many unsightly kiosks have been ordered to be dismantled; the problem of electric vehicles soliciting customers and colluding with shops to inflate service prices has also been regularly inspected and dealt with.

Amidst the bustling atmosphere of the seafood market during the tourist season, these small but effective weighing scales are contributing to a change in how tourists are treated. Not only do they give buyers more peace of mind when choosing seafood, but the transparency in buying and selling also helps build a more friendly, civilized, and professional image of Sam Son in the eyes of tourists from near and far.
