Are '2-in-1' laptops losing their appeal?

First appearing in the 1990s, 2-in-1 laptops only truly became popular in the early 2010s.

The popularity of 2-in-1 laptops was boosted by the release of Windows 8, which encouraged the use of this type of device. While the idea of 2-in-1 laptops offered convenience, the industry has now gradually shifted away from the 2-in-1 format. The main reason is that tablets are becoming increasingly affordable, while PC applications are still not optimized for touch screens.

Although touchscreens on laptops offer some advantages, such as faster document browsing, the high cost of 2-in-1 laptops makes them less attractive compared to buying a laptop and a tablet separately.

Even if a laptop has a touchscreen, this feature is often considered a plus point rather than a deciding factor when buying. Therefore, if you're looking for a new laptop, you might want to consider ruling out 2-in-1 models because you might be paying for features you'll never use.

Factors that make 2-in-1 laptops less attractive

Since the first iPad launched in 2010, tablets have changed the way we approach mobile computing. Touchscreens made navigating apps and documents much easier than the unstable trackpads on laptops at the time. However, over the past decade, the appeal of the iPad has significantly diminished due to a market with more brands and price points. For example, while a 16GB Wi-Fi + 3G iPad costs $629, users can purchase a better-spec Samsung Galaxy tablet for less than half the price.

Furthermore, even if price isn't the deciding factor, current PC applications are no longer optimally designed for touch screens. In contrast to the touch-screen preference of Windows 8, Windows 11 has relegated this feature to a secondary consideration. Most current Windows applications are not optimized for touch screens, while trackpads or USB mice remain a more comfortable option.

Although Apple devices offer better hybrid interface support than Windows, if users want optimal flexibility, buying a MacBook and an iPad Mini separately might be a more sensible option than investing in a 2-in-1 device that doesn't fulfill both functions.
