- On May 21, 2025, the 15th National Assembly passed Resolution No. 199/2025/QH15 on shortening the term of the 15th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 term, and at the same time set the election date for the 16th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term. Accordingly, the election will take place on March 15, 2026, about 2 months earlier than previous elections.

Along with adjusting the timeline, the National Assembly has amended and supplemented a number of articles of the Law on Election of National Assembly Deputies and People's Council Deputies, ensuring compliance with the two-level local government model, while shortening the time to carry out the election process and procedures. Specifically: from the last time of submitting candidacy dossiers to the election day is 42 days; from the election day to the date of opening the first session of the 16th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term is 22 days .

The timelines in the consultation process are also adjusted to be shorter: the deadline for submitting candidacy applications is February 1, 2026; the time gap from the deadline for organizing the second consultation conference to the deadline for organizing the third consultation conference is 17 days; the time gap from the deadline for organizing the third consultation conference to the deadline for announcing and posting the list of candidates is 7 days; the time gap from the deadline for announcing and posting the list of candidates to the election day is 16 days.

The deadline for holding additional elections and re-elections is no later than 7 days after the election day; the deadline for announcing election results and the list of elected National Assembly deputies is no later than 10 days after the election, as for the deadline for announcing election results and the list of elected deputies to People's Councils at all levels; the deadline for receiving complaints about election results is no later than 3 days from the date of announcement of election results and the deadline for considering and resolving complaints about election results is no later than 7 days from the date of receiving the complaint.

Notably, for the first time, the Law adds the title of “Secretary” to the Election Committee and the Election Board; adds representatives of the National Assembly Delegation to participate as members of the Election Committee at the provincial level.
