Due to the impact of storm No. 3, the new school year of the charity class at Hai Phong Cathedral had to be postponed by 10 days compared to the schedule. The opening ceremony took place solemnly and warmly with full rituals: Flag salute; reading the letter from President Ho Chi Minh to students on the first school opening day of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam; letter from General Secretary and President To Lam on the opening day of the 2024-2025 school year.
During the opening ceremony, students received new school year gifts and Mid-Autumn Festival gifts from teachers at Dinh Tien Hoang Primary School, Nguyen Hue Primary School, Hai Phong Cathedral and charitable organizations and individuals.
This school year, the charity class at Hai Phong Cathedral has nearly 30 students, each with a different background. Some students go to school and do various jobs to make a living, such as shining shoes, selling newspapers, etc. Many homeless and destitute children are taken in by the nuns of Hai Phong Cathedral to study; some students have congenital disabilities and cannot attend publiceducational institutions, etc.
Ms. To Minh Nguyet in An Duong ward, Le Chan district (Hai Phong) has a granddaughter born in 2013; her father has a mental illness, and the child has intellectual disability and epilepsy. She has been attending the charity class for 3 years. Ms. Nguyet could not hide her emotions when her granddaughter can now read basic words and knows how to protect herself.
Ms. To Minh Nguyet shared: “Now my child can recognize letters, read, and do addition and subtraction within 10. The teachers worked very hard to achieve this. When I came here, the teachers guided me little by little, held my hand to teach me how to write, and taught me many things. The teachers also enthusiastically taught me what to do when I go out, and not to follow strangers.”
The charity class of Hai Phong Cathedral is taught directly by teachers from Dinh Tien Hoang Primary School and Nguyen Hue Primary School (Hong Bang District, Hai Phong), with the support of nuns in the Cathedral. The children are organized into 3 classes; including 1 class 1; a combined class of 2-3 and a combined class of 4-5.
Teacher Doan Thi Thu Hang, Principal of Dinh Tien Hoang Primary School, said that the school chooses young, dedicated teachers to teach charity classes and has a specific teaching plan, suitable for the characteristics of the students here.
Teacher Doan Thi Thu Hang said: “To have a quality charity class is an effort of the teachers and the charity class management board of the cathedral. Because the children do not attend school regularly; secondly, they almost do not have time to do homework. Therefore, in class, teachers have to try their best; teaching in school can try 1 or 2 parts, but perhaps for charity classes, teachers have to try 10 times harder”.
In the 2023-2024 school year, the charity class at Hai Phong Cathedral had 28 students; at the end of the school year, 98% of students completed the program and 100% of students completed the Primary program.
Among them, 2 students completed excellently and 6 students achieved the title of Good Students in Study and Training. In addition to learning knowledge of subjects, students also learn English, life skills, and self-protection skills to integrate into the community.
