The Ministry of Construction has just sent an official dispatch to the People's Committee of Can Tho City in response to the proposal to soon invest in and upgrade items at Can Tho International Airport.
According to the Ministry of Construction, the main infrastructure system of Can Tho International Airport currently includes 1 runway (3,000 m x 45 m in size), 10 aircraft parking positions capable of handling aircraft such as B747, B777, A320, A321 and equivalent; 1 passenger terminal with a capacity of about 3 million passengers/year.
Passenger throughput through Can Tho International Airport in the period of 2019-2023 will reach an average of about 1-1.4 million passengers/year; in 2024 it will reach 1.035 million passengers; in the first 9 months of 2025 it will reach about 0.8 million passengers.
“Thus, the current infrastructure of Can Tho International Airport basically meets the air transport needs of the locality and the Mekong Delta region, serving socio -economic development,” said the Ministry of Construction.
According to the Master Plan for the development of the national airport system for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, Can Tho International Airport is planned at level 4E; in the 2021-2030 period, it will have a capacity of 7 million passengers/year; with a vision to 2050, it will reach 12 million passengers/year.
To implement the Planning, the Ministry of Construction has approved the outline and tasks of planning Can Tho International Airport for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, and assigned the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam as the planning agency.
Therefore, the Ministry of Construction requested the People's Committee of Can Tho City to direct units to coordinate with the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam in the process of making the Plan, ensuring consistency with the socio-economic development orientation of the city and the region, as a basis for investment.
The Ministry of Construction said that in the medium-term public investment plan for 2026-2030, the Ministry has proposed a need of about VND2,661 billion for Can Tho International Airport to renovate the existing runway, build parallel taxiways and a synchronous connecting taxiway system to improve operational capacity.
Based on the capital allocated by the National Assembly and the Government, the Ministry of Construction will decide on the list of investment projects for the 2026-2030 period in accordance with the capital and criteria decided by competent authorities.
For the remaining essential infrastructure of Can Tho International Airport, the Ministry of Construction said the airport enterprise (Vietnam Airports Corporation) is responsible for investment.
Regarding aviation and non-aviation service works at airports, the Ministry of Construction said that according to the draft Law on Civil Aviation of Vietnam being submitted by the Government to the National Assembly at the 10th Session of the 15th National Assembly, airport enterprises will organize the investment in these works.
“Therefore, the People's Committee of Can Tho City is requested to direct units to coordinate with Can Tho Airport Enterprise to study the needs and investment plans for the remaining works, aviation and non-aviation service works to suit the air transport needs and the socio-economic development needs of the locality,” the Ministry of Construction's dispatch stated.
Previously, the People's Committee of Can Tho City sent a dispatch to the Prime Minister proposing early investment and upgrading of Can Tho International Airport items according to the plan, in order to realize the goal of becoming a regional logistics center, a hub connecting road and air transport.
