Specifically, a report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) warns of the risk of a "large" and deep gap between countries. This gap is expected to be reflected in economic efficiency, workforce skills and management capacity.

Speaking at a press conference in Geneva, Philip Schellekens, Chief Economist of the UNDP Asia- Pacific Regional Office, stressed the seriousness of the problem: "We believe that AI is heralding a new era of rising inequality between countries, reversing the narrowing trend that has been taking place over the past 50 years."
The UNDP report, “The Next Big Difference: Why AI Could Increase Inequality Between Countries,” says trade, technological advances and economic development in recent decades have helped significantly narrow the global gap, bringing about major improvements in income, health and education .
However, the report highlights that these achievements and benefits are now at serious risk of being eroded by the uneven development of AI technology.
Mr Schellekens also warned that even richer nations cannot avoid the consequences if developing countries are left behind in the AI era.
