A 29-year-old woman (in Yen Bai ) who was 38 weeks pregnant went to the Central Obstetrics Hospital for a check-up. Here, the patient was advised to terminate the pregnancy due to a complex congenital heart disease and reversed organs. The pregnant woman was then transferred to the Hanoi Heart Hospital.
This woman said that when she was 12 weeks pregnant, she went for a check-up and discovered she had a complex congenital heart disease. Doctors advised her to terminate the pregnancy, but she was determined to keep the baby.
According to doctors, this woman has a very rare disease. A normal person's heart has 4 chambers, 2 ventricles and 2 atria. However, the female patient only has one ventricle and one atrium, along with situs inversus.
The patient with this abnormality will suffer from heart failure when he reaches adulthood, and in more severe cases, death. In addition, this patient has another defect, pulmonary valve stenosis, which helps blood pump poorly to the heart.
After receiving the patient, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Sinh Hien, Director of Hanoi Heart Hospital, consulted with the cardiovascular team, along with obstetricians of the Central Maternity Hospital to successfully deliver the mother.
After the surgery, the baby was transferred to the Central Maternity Hospital for care. The mother remained at the Hanoi Heart Hospital for post-natal recovery. By the afternoon of June 22, the mother's health had stabilized and she was transferred to the Central Maternity Hospital with her baby.
