In recent years, the topic of "unidentified anomalous phenomena" (UAP), more commonly known as "flying saucers" or "unidentified flying objects" (UFOs), has gone beyond the realm of "conspiracy theories" and has increasingly attracted the attention of serious research institutions in a number of countries.
The Pentagon recently declassified several videos shot by military pilots of objects with “unexplained flight characteristics,” and the US Congress held a series of hearings on the subject. It was later discovered that China was conducting similar research.
The question here is whether the governments of some countries may be hiding the fact that they are allowing some agencies to make contact with extraterrestrial civilizations, or whether they have evidence of the existence of such civilizations?
In this article, let us try to consider this issue seriously from a scientific perspective without any speculation.
Arguments suggest that it is possible that "someone was covering up"
Any nation that currently possesses undeniable evidence of the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations, or has even made contact with them, has at least two reasons for concealing this type of information:
First, to prevent social panic. The existence of an extraterrestrial civilization could cause a major crisis that would cause serious, even irreparable, damage to our species.

Religious institutions, economic systems, social orders—all of these structures could be threatened when faced with the reality that humanity is not the only, or even the dominant, force on Earth, if another, more intelligent, and capable “humanity” suddenly appeared.
Second, geopolitical considerations. Establishing communication with an extraterrestrial civilization by a nation (or interest group) could give them access to advanced technologies, which would give them a huge military and economic advantage. Keeping this information secret would become a matter of national (or “group”) security.
In 1950, theoretical physicist and Nobel Prize winner Enrico Fermi noted that we lack clear evidence for the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations.
Some people also explain the "Fermi paradox" by saying that someone has actually made contact with an extraterrestrial civilization, but the information about it is kept secret and only a small group of people know about it.
Arguments against concealment
Despite the seemingly tight formal logic of the above arguments, some scientists have pointed out serious obstacles to the existence of a "conspiracy to keep this information secret":
The impossibility of keeping secrets
In 2016, mathematician David Grimes developed a mathematical formula that showed the more people who know a secret, the faster it will be revealed.
For example, in order for a government to cover up the fact that it has made contact with aliens, the contact must first take place. And this can only be done with the participation of thousands of scientists, engineers, and soldiers. The possibility of information leakage would be extremely high.

It is also worth mentioning that the Manhattan Project (the project to research and manufacture atomic bombs during World War II) - one of the most secret projects in history (about 99% of the 130,000 people involved in this project had no idea what the ultimate goal of the project was); yet the press reported on this project before the first atomic bomb was tested.
The relative independence of the scientific community
Scientists working in astronomy, astrophysics, and astrobiology around the world work almost entirely independently of each other.
Thousands of telescopes, both public and private, constantly observe the sky. But if someone had evidence, or even a plausible argument, for the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations, they would not be able to hide this information from the entire scientific community on Earth.
As soon as a small group of scientists proposed that comet 3I/ATLAS could be an alien probe, the matter immediately became a topic of widespread public debate.
The absence of physical evidence
In decades of research into UFOs, no one has been able to produce any evidence that can definitively prove that aliens have ever visited Earth.
Hazy videos, low-quality photographs, and eyewitness accounts are not enough to prove that aliens (or their automated research stations) have ever visited Earth.
Openness of search engines
Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) institutes operate openly and publish all their data, allowing anyone to participate in the analysis process.
If a signal from an extraterrestrial civilization were recorded, it would almost certainly be known to the entire world immediately. Furthermore, if SETI could provide such evidence, they would certainly be rewarded with a large sum of money.
What does science say?
The scientific community has always adhered to the principle that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. And at least so far we don't have any such evidence.
The documents released by the Pentagon so far on the UFO phenomenon have not been accompanied by any clear explanation that we are dealing with alien technology.

Most reported UFO sightings are eventually explained away as either faulty instruments, optical illusions, or "secret military tests."
Studies show that there are about 10 billion Earth-like planets in the Milky Way alone. And this fact raises the possibility that somewhere out there, intelligent beings have appeared and exist, thereby raising the question of their origin and place in the universe.
But the distances between stars are so great that communication between us and other civilizations becomes impossible due to the physical limit of the speed of light (which is also the transmission speed of radio waves).
So is it possible that the governments of some countries may have been hiding their connections with "intelligent brothers" in the universe?
Theoretically, it is possible. But in practice, it is extremely unlikely. Globalization, the openness of the scientific community, and the difficulty of keeping such information secret make any conspiracy theory about "keeping secrets" impossible.
An important reminder is that to keep a clear head and stay away from the abyss of madness, it is important to maintain scientific skepticism and resist the temptation of conspiracy theories that want to simplify matters./.
