Risking raising loach fish, a specialty fish, and growing CNC cucumbers, Thai Binh farmers unexpectedly earn billions

Báo Dân ViệtBáo Dân Việt17/12/2024

Mr. Tran Van Thuat was the first person to bring the loach to Trong Quan commune, Dong Hung district ( Thai Binh province). After 3 years, the loach farming model has brought Mr. Thuat a revenue of nearly 1 billion VND per year, after deducting expenses, the profit is 500 million VND.

Pioneer farmer raising loach

Trong Quan is known as a purely agricultural commune of Dong Hung district. In the past, farmers only grew rice twice a year and winter crops, but now in the commune there are many models of conversion from traditional production to aquaculture, cow raising, vegetable and fruit growing in greenhouses... bringing high income.

Mr. Tran Van Thuat, Vinh Hoa village (Trong Quan commune) is one of such typical examples as he was the first person to bring cartilaginous loach to raise in the commune.

He said that in the past, his family only grew rice in the low-lying fields but it was not effective. After the commune consolidated the land, they switched to raising freshwater fish using traditional methods. However, the growing time was long, the price of commercial fish fluctuated, and the annual profit was only a few tens of millions of dong.

To develop his family's economy , Mr. Thuat began to look for a new direction.

Through friends' introduction and while watching TV, he learned that Nam Dinh was successfully raising loach - a fish that is easy to raise and has high economic efficiency, so he decided to visit and learn about this model.

After a period of learning about how to raise loach, Mr. Thuat officially brought this fish species to Trong Quan commune at the end of 2022, when he released 400,000 loach fry on an area of 2,000 square meters.

"Cartilaginous loach has many advantages with a short breeding cycle, only about 3-4 months/batch. This species is less susceptible to diseases, has delicious meat, is softer than Vietnamese loach, and has a favorable consumption market. Because cartilaginous loach has high economic efficiency, the breeding technique is not complicated, while there are very few models in the province, I decided to try breeding it," Mr. Thuat recalled.

Mr. Thuat said that loach has the characteristic of floating and voracious eating, so loach food needs to ensure adequate nutrition. Just feed them twice a day at a certain time, ensuring they eat all the food, avoiding excess that pollutes the pond environment.

Loaches are susceptible to fungus and bloating, so during the breeding process, it is necessary to pay attention to the water source in the pond to always be clean and have enough water. Periodically changing the pond water will ensure that the loaches grow and develop well.

"After each harvest, I spend 10 days renovating the pond, then continue raising the next batch," Mr. Thuat shared.

With a systematic and scientific method of raising cartilaginous catfish, since the beginning of the year, Mr. Thuat's family has harvested 2 crops, weighing 40 - 50 fish/kg, with a total output of over 10 tons. With a selling price of 70,000 - 100,000 VND/kg, Mr. Thuat earned nearly 1 billion VND in revenue, after deducting expenses, a profit of nearly 500 million VND.

Quit construction job to raise cows and grow cucumbers

Leaving his construction job to return to his hometown to start a business with a passion for farming, Mr. Pham Xuan Khanh, Hung Quan village (Trong Quan commune) is a typical farmer in the pioneering process of changing the structure of crops and livestock.

Mr. Khanh said that at the end of 2016, he had accumulated 8 hectares of land from 100 households growing ineffective rice and the commune's landfill to invest in barns and grow grass to raise 30 buffaloes and cows. By 2020, he had started raising fattened cows with a herd of over 140 cows regularly maintained.

Accordingly, Mr. Khanh built separate areas for easy management such as: barn area, production area, food processing area, grass field, food crops. In addition, the farm also raises chickens, ducks...

Another interesting thing about Mr. Khanh's farm is that, in addition to raising cows systematically and scientifically, the owner of 140 cows also lets the cows listen to music. "Letting cows listen to music will help them reduce stress, eat well, sleep well, thereby stimulating growth," Mr. Khanh shared.

With the fattening cow model, Mr. Khanh earns hundreds of millions of dong each year.

Not stopping at fattening cattle, in 2023, Mr. Khanh renovated 5,000m2 to build a greenhouse to grow clean cucumbers. In addition, he also grows many other plants such as: squash, winter melon, cassava...

To suit the weather, Mr. Khanh chose cold cucumber varieties for the winter-spring crop and cool cucumber varieties for the summer-autumn crop. After only 40 days of planting, he was able to harvest continuously for 1 month with 3 quintals of cucumbers/day. "Although it is new to planting, the output is stable and effective, so I am very confident in production," he said.

This is the second crop that Mr. Khanh's family has grown cucumbers in a greenhouse. After more than a month of planting the pots, the cucumbers have begun to be harvested. On average, his family harvests 300 kg of cucumbers a day, at a price of 10,000 VND/kg, with a harvest time of about 1 month. The average profit is 35 - 40 million VND per 1,000 m2 of cucumbers grown in a greenhouse.

Currently, in addition to the 2,000 m2 of cucumbers in the network that are being harvested, Mr. Khanh's family is expanding the area to 8,000 m2 to grow cucumbers and winter squash. The model of applying technology in agricultural production of Mr. Khanh's family not only enriches the family, but also contributes to creating jobs for rural workers, opening up a new direction in agricultural production in the locality.

With success in converting crops and livestock, Mr. Thuat and Mr. Khanh are 2 of over 15,000 good farmer and business members of Dong Hung district.

Chairman of the Dong Hung District Farmers' Association Pham Duc Tuyen said that the movement "Farmers compete in production, good business, unite to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty" was well implemented by the District Farmers' Association.

The Association focuses on propagating, mobilizing, and supporting members to actively study and apply scientific and technological advances, invest capital in livestock development, and convert ineffective land into livestock and aquaculture with high economic efficiency.

The movement has had strong changes, many members have boldly invested in developing production and business, achieving high economic efficiency, creating jobs for many local workers and developing household economy.

A typical example is Mr. Thuat's and Mr. Khanh's households in Trong Quan commune, where they have boldly invested capital to accumulate land to expand their farms, raise commercial loach, build net houses to grow clean cucumbers, each year earning hundreds of millions of dong and creating jobs for dozens of workers.
