At the seminar "Media Training from Innovation to the New Era" organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper in Ho Chi Minh City on the morning of December 9, journalist Nguyen Ngoc Mai, Deputy Head of the International Department of Thanh Nien Newspaper, introduced a method to help improve the capacity of students in the field of media that Thanh Nien Newspaper is coordinating with universities. That is the practical training model right at the editorial office, lasting a full semester of 2-3 months. This is more effective than the traditional method of only accepting students for internship.

"Our goal is to help training institutions be proud, trainees confident, and employers satisfied. This is also a 'vaccine' to help students not be surprised when entering the labor market," Ms. Mai emphasized.

The special feature of this model is that the school will co-develop the course with the editorial office, creating conditions for students to hone specific skills of the profession such as editing, news production and reporting, news appraisal, photography. Up to now, it is estimated that hundreds of students majoring in communication at universities such as Hoa Sen, Van Lang, and Ho Chi Minh City Economics and Finance have come to study at the Thanh Nien Newspaper editorial office, Ms. Mai informed.

Not only learning knowledge from the real market, students participating in this model also practice in the studio system with professional filming and editing equipment. At the same time, they also experience all stages of news production, including learning how to properly apply artificial intelligence (AI), and the products made by students will also be commented and evaluated according to the editorial board's review criteria.

"Many students, after being guided and learning and working at the editorial office, have published many articles and photo collections in Thanh Nien Newspaper, attracting hundreds of thousands of views. They are also inspired with passion and responsibility for the profession. Some of them even want to intern and collaborate with the newspaper after their studies," Ms. Mai shared, adding that the lecturers are skilled journalists, rich in experience and have good pedagogical skills.

The female journalist also emphasized that the practical training model between the editorial office and the school is not a temporary solution but a long-term strategy with the greater expectation of "raising the standard" of output for young personnel in the media and journalism industry. Learning journalism and media at the editorial office also helps you build a "filter" for online content and learn how to verify information.

Not only providing training courses for students, Thanh Nien Newspaper also organizes short-term training and sharing courses for lecturers, media specialists, and those who want to improve related skills such as interviewing, answering interviews; dealing with the media, handling crises, media cooperation; producing multimedia products, building media content suitable for channels and platforms...

"The aspect of media cooperation is very important, because many units only see press agencies as places to publish critical information without knowing that the parties can cooperate to enhance value," Ms. Mai noted.

Regarding schools and training facilities, Master-Journalist Nguyen Ngoc Mai suggested that these units should replicate the practical training model for other fields in media training at employers; create conditions for students to have more contact and exchange with professionals, as well as regularly conduct in-depth surveys from both sides: learners and employers...

The seminar "Media Training from Innovation to the New Era" is part of a series of activities celebrating the 40th anniversary of Thanh Nien Newspaper's first issue (January 3, 1986 - January 3, 2026). This is an opportunity for universities training in journalism and media to share their training orientation in the field of media, their achievements, innovations, creativity, and difficulties and recommendations.
