On the social network Truth Social, Mr. Trump emphasized Mr. Landau's contributions in reducing illegal immigration "to historic lows" during his time as US Ambassador to Mexico from 2019-2021.
Former Ambassador Landau’s appointment as the second-in-command at the State Department must be approved by the Senate, which is expected to be controlled by Republicans starting on January 3, 2025. If confirmed, Landau would join Senator Marco Rubio, the future Secretary of State, in implementing Trump 2.0 foreign policy.
In addition, Mr. Trump noted that former Ambassador Landau will cooperate with Senator Rubio "to promote the security and prosperity of the nation through the foreign policy perspective of 'America First'".
The two nominees to lead the State Department reflect the importance of Latin America in Washington's foreign policy.
Observers say Mr. Landau is likely to take on immigration policy with the aim of reducing the flow of illegal migrants, as well as imposing tariffs and reviewing the USMCA free trade agreement with Mexico and Canada.
