The Austrian defender is expected to leave Elche after this season, and Manchester United are the club most closely monitoring the player. Afffengruber's release clause with Elche is around €20 million, a reasonable fee for MU given the club's preparations for a return to the Champions League next season.
Afffengruber was on Ruben Amorim's priority list before the Portuguese strategist was sacked in January. During his time in charge, Amorim stuck with the 3-4-3 formation and wanted to build a defense around center-backs who were good at ball control, fast, and tactically versatile.
TEAMtalk reports that Amorim sees Afffengruber as the ideal long-term partner for Leny Yoro in the heart of Manchester United's defense. With his 1.85m height, strong tackling ability, and consistent ball distribution skills, the Austrian player is considered a good fit for Old Trafford's rebuilding strategy.
A major plus for Afffengruber is his versatility; he can play not only as a center-back but also as a right-back in a four-man defense. Manchester United are returning to the deal because they believe the 25-year-old center-back is affordably priced and capable of playing in multiple defensive positions.
Afffengruber rose through the ranks of RB Salzburg's academy before making a name for himself at Sturm Graz. Elche signed him in 2024 and quickly turned the center-back into a key player in their defense.
A standout season in Spain also earned Afffengruber his first call-up to the Austrian national team last March. He is now aiming to participate in the 2026 World Cup with the national team.
