India's weather department has forecast that high temperatures will continue across the region for the next few days and has put several states on high alert.
Some areas in the Indian capital reported temperatures as high as 49.9 degrees Celsius on May 28, 9 degrees higher than the weather department's forecast. Neighbouring states such as Punjab and Haryana also saw soaring temperatures, with one place in Rajasthan hitting 50 degrees Celsius.

April, May and June are consistently hot in most parts of India. However, extreme heat is fast becoming a public health crisis in India, with the weather becoming increasingly hot over the past decade and often accompanied by severe water shortages.
