In recent years, the Vietnamese film market has been assessed to have many improvements with a series of films earning hundreds of billions of VND. However, there are still many works that suffer heavy losses when released in theaters.
Fragile Flower (2024)
After more than 3 weeks in theaters, Fragile Flower directed by Mai Thu Huyen has earned 430 million VND, becoming the lowest-grossing film on Vietnamese screens this year up to this point. The work is also ranked among the lowest-grossing films of all time at the Vietnamese box office.
The revenue of Fragile Flower is said to be quite far from the film's budget of up to tens of billions of dong.
Mai Thu Huyen also expressed her wish that the film would be shown more often and at a better time to attract viewers. However, audiences and experts commented that Fragile Flower has content that is not suitable for the majority's taste.
In addition, many people also think that the quality of this work is more like a TV series or a musical than a movie. In fact, this work only earned about 10 million VND during the April 30 and May 1 holidays.
Legend of King Dinh (2022)
In 2022, Legend of King Dinh - the debut work of director Anthony Vo, revolving around the story of Dinh Bo Linh defeating the 12 warlords and unifying the country - was released in theaters with a revenue of only about 40 million VND.
This is an "alarming" number, if not a "record low". Many opinions say that the film has flaws in the script, character creation, and lack of investment in the historical setting.
In addition, modest screenings and limitations in media work also contributed to the film's revenue being affected.
Many people expressed regret that a work depicting the country's history had "disastrous" revenue. However, many people also said that this result is a warning for filmmakers.
"The film is well invested and attractively exploited, it will naturally attract audiences to the theater, instead of just waiting for the audience to support it because it is a historical film," commented one viewer.
The Lover (2022)
Also in 2022, the movie Lover was released with the participation of supermodel Minh Tu (as Diem Tinh). The work attracted attention because it was filled with hot scenes, but the revenue was not very promising.
Many people think the film is offensive, the hot scenes overwhelm the content and are picky about the audience. For the first time entering the cinema and playing the main role, Minh Tu is also said to not be able to fully express the character's emotions.
Besides, the script, although carrying many messages about love and life, was not convincing and not coherent enough. As a result, the film only earned about 1.3 billion VND.
The Third Man (2022)
With an investment of 33 billion VND, The Third Person - a movie produced by Ly Nha Ky and co-starring with Han Jae Suk (actor in the movie Glass Shoes) - only earned nearly 1 billion VND.
Ly Nha Ky said that initially, she only appeared in this film as an actress. Shortly after filming, the producer encountered difficulties, causing the film to "fall into a dead end". At that time, Ly Nha Ky spent a large sum of money to "save" this film.
Ly Nha Ky also admitted that she saw many shortcomings in The Third Person, and said that she had many difficulties in reviving the project. However, she "saved" this work for many reasons, including not wanting the image of the Vietnamese team to lose points in the eyes of foreign colleagues.
