The producer of “Heaven’s Treasure” has just released the first teaser, attracting attention as it marks the reunion of Tuan Tran and Phuong Anh Dao - the duo who created a strong box office effect with the movie “Mai”. However, besides the positive signals from the teaser, the fact that the movie continues to exploit familiar character motifs also raises many questions about the level of novelty in the acting of the two actors.
The teaser opens with a scene of Yen Hoa fishing village and immediately impresses with Ngoc's (Phuong Anh Dao) decisive dialogue. The cold but hurt expression shows that this character has many layers of emotions - a role that requires inner depth. The image of her carrying her child on the embankment or the desperate look in the scene of being tied up continues to promote Phuong Anh Dao's strength in psychological films.
However, the actress’s continued role as a single mother reminds the audience of her image in “Mai”. In her role in Tran Thanh’s Tet film, Phuong Anh Dao also plays a single mother, which makes it easy for the audience to compare.
On the other hand, Tuan Tran portrays Hong - an optimistic and approachable tourist worker who hides many family conflicts. The scenes where he takes his mother and son to the beach, fishing or visiting the fishing village show that this character has the "healing" quality typical of Tet films. More notable is the change in tone when the incident occurs: Hong drives a canoe through a thunderstorm and confronts the villain Thien (Quach Ngoc Ngoan). The line "Seven years, the boy has no father..." helps Tuan Tran reveal the depth of his emotions, from reproach to pain. This is a challenge for the actor in shedding his familiar youthful image to enter a more serious inner role.
The combination of the two actors is therefore both an advantage and a challenge. They have good chemistry thanks to having worked together on a hit project, but the old success also creates new pressure: if the characters and emotional flow are not different, the film will easily be compared to “Mai”. The teaser shows that the crew is trying to separate the film from the pure tragic color by adding elements of gangsters, chases, island atmosphere and layers of family repression. This is a direction that has the potential to expand the acting range of both actors.
From the initial signals, “Heavenly Treasure” possesses dense emotional material, an experienced cast and a new cinematic setting. However, the level of success depends on whether the film is different enough to help Tuan Tran - Phuong Anh Dao step out of the “shadow” of 520 billion VND of “Mai” or not.
