The brilliant director Christopher Nolan recently appeared as a guest on the 60 Minutes program on May 18th. There, the two-time Oscar-winning director shared candidly with journalist Scott Pelley about his lifestyle that goes against the trend of technology.
The 56-year-old filmmaker admitted he "has no interest" in sending emails online. Instead, he regularly receives "a lot of emails printed out" on paper to process directly. When asked about his refusal to use a smartphone, the director of the upcoming film responded... The Odyssey shared that he is simply living the way we all used to live. He feels incredibly fortunate not to be bound by the digital rules of modern society.
The biggest reason this great filmmaker rejected the wave of technology was to protect his absolute focus on art. For Christopher Nolan, smartphones were the biggest source of distraction in a highly creative environment like a film set.

Nevertheless, the Hollywood maverick humorously admitted that keeping a distance from technology is becoming increasingly difficult in daily life, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. Christopher Nolan believes that the popularity of QR codes has caused considerable inconvenience for those who don't use smartphones. Even so, when traveling or on business trips, the director still only carries a traditional flip phone.
Christopher Nolan's working principles
This strict rule has long been an "ironclad" law for any A-list star joining Nolan's film crew. He began making films at a time when using phones on set was considered unprofessional. "Phones are distracting, and people are much more productive without them. You can't text and be fully focused on what's happening on set at the same time," Christopher Nolan shared with Esquire magazine.
His representative also confirmed that cell phones and cigarettes are two things that "have no place" on Christopher Nolan's film sets.
Because of these strict regulations, the cast sometimes had to find ways to "bend the rules." Recently, Tom Holland – a star in The Odyssey – humorously revealed to GQ that he repeatedly asked crew members to hide his phone so he could check the scores of his favorite team during filming.

Christopher Nolan's IMAX 70mm The Odyssey is selling out in advance, even though it's still a year away from its theatrical release. The film also boasts an A-list cast including Tom Holland (playing Odysseus's son), Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, and Jon Bernthal, with an estimated budget of over $250 million.

According to statistics from The Numbers , his vast filmography, including the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014), and the Oscar-winning blockbuster Oppenheimer (2023), has grossed a record-breaking total of over $6 billion worldwide.
Christopher Nolan is lauded by both critics and the general public as one of the most outstanding and influential directors of 21st-century cinema. His unique style is not only characterized by his "reject" of technology, but also by his mind-bending storytelling, complex non-linear structures, and unwavering commitment to traditional filmmaking techniques. The director is also renowned for minimizing the use of CGI (computer-generated imagery) to deliver more authentic and emotionally rich cinematic experiences for viewers.
