Hair given away, love remains

In the hustle and bustle of life, sometimes just a small act, coming from a compassionate heart, is enough to create extraordinary things. In Quang Tri - a land of deep affection, the story of long hair being cut short to give strength and faith to cancer patients has become a spreading beauty, a living proof of the spirit of "the healthy leaves cover the torn leaves", "love others as you love yourself".

Hair Extensions of Love

Recently, the movement of voluntarily donating hair to cancer patients has been quietly carried out by many people. Dozens of individuals, regardless of age or profession, have voluntarily cut off their long, silky, beloved hair with the desire to contribute to extending hope for cancer patients, helping them believe in the good things in life, and having more motivation to overcome the pain of illness. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Nhi, a daughter of Ben Hai commune, currently living and working in Da Nang, is one of many such kind-hearted people.

Last year, when reading touching news about the journey of fighting cancer of many patients, especially women, Ms. Nhi did not hesitate to voluntarily cut off 45cm of her hair. The long, shiny hair that she had painstakingly cared for for so long suddenly became more meaningful than ever. Each strand of hair was carefully trimmed, carefully packaged, and then sent to the Breast Cancer Network Vietnam (BCNV) Office - a reputable address specializing in receiving donated hair to make wigs for patients.

When asked about her feelings after this action, Nhi smiled brightly: "I am very happy and pleased to be able to do something good for cancer patients and for society. Honestly, just thinking about how my hair can help someone be more confident and optimistic in the fight against illness, I feel strangely warm inside. I am growing my hair long so that I can continue to donate it to cancer patients. This is a journey I want to stick with."

Like Nhi, Phan Thi Ngoc Huyen from Gio Linh commune, currently working in Ho Chi Minh City, is also a vivid example of the volunteer spirit of Quang Tri people. Huyen's story is even more special because this is not the first time this young girl has performed such a noble act.

In 2024, Huyen went to the BCNV headquarters in Ho Chi Minh City to cut off her long, silky black hair. That was the second time Huyen voluntarily donated her hair to cancer patients. The first time, when the hair donation movement was still quite new, Huyen boldly pioneered. And now, that continuation further affirms a warm heart, constantly spreading love.

Huyền confided: "I feel so lucky to be healthy and have a full life. Seeing cancer patients fighting their illness every day, I just hope to be able to contribute a small part to help them have more strength. This hair will grow longer, and the joy and happiness of sharing will always last forever." Huyền also cherishes the plan to continue growing her hair long to donate hair in the next times, making this volunteer act a part of her life.

To ensure the quality of donated hair and its suitability for the wig-making process, organizations such as BCNV or other recipients often have specific standards to help hair donors prepare better, ensuring that the donated hair is used most effectively. Accordingly, donated hair must be of a minimum length to be able to make a wig and must be tied tightly with elastic bands at both ends (or more if the hair is too long) into bunches, then cut straight above the elastic bands. This helps prevent the hair from coming loose and maintains the required length.

Spread noble deeds

In recent years, the movement of donating hair to cancer patients has been growing strongly across the country, touching the hearts of millions of people. Instead of frequently changing their hairstyle or throwing away their cut locks, many people take the time to care for and grow their hair so that they can be eligible to donate their hair to those who are unfortunately suffering from serious illnesses.

Because for many cancer patients, especially women, hair is not only an external beauty but also a part of their confidence, even the mental strength to fight the disease. When undergoing chemotherapy, hair falls out, leading to complexes and psychological damage that is difficult to compensate for. A wig made from real hair, expressing love, is a priceless spiritual medicine, helping them regain their smile and will to live.

According to Ms. Pham Thi Thuy Hong, Head of the Quang Tri Resilient Women's Club in Quang Tri province (old), the hair donation movement for cancer patients is a noble gesture, worth encouraging because it gives strength and faith to cancer patients to overcome the pain of illness.

"The members of the club are female patients who unfortunately have breast cancer. The club was established with the purpose of sharing knowledge and experience in treating the disease, as well as encouraging each other to overcome the pain of illness. In addition, the club also actively participates in the project "Hair for pediatric cancer patients" and "Hair fund for cancer patients".

Accordingly, from January 2024 to June 2025, the Club received donated hair from 127 women. In the near future, the Club plans to establish a separate hair fund for cancer patients in Quang Tri and neighboring provinces; at the same time, mobilize funds for hair weaving (the cost of weaving each set of hair is from 1.2 to 2 million VND) so that unfortunate cancer patients have more motivation and confidence in life," said Ms. Hong.

In Quang Binh province (old), the Quang Binh Resilient Women's Club is also operating very effectively. The club's programs and activities always spread the spirit of optimism, positive thinking, and share useful knowledge so that members can soon overcome breast cancer with determination and understanding. In particular, from the beginning of 2025 until now, the Quang Binh Resilient Women's Club has also received donated hair from 10 sisters to support cancer patients.

Strands of hair, seemingly lifeless, when given with all our hearts, become extremely meaningful gifts, thereby contributing to spreading profound human values, arousing love and responsibility towards the community.
