The list of sports for the 2027 SEA Games will be announced soon.
Malaysia is expected to officially announce the list of proposed sports for the 2027 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) Malaysia shortly after the current SEA Games in Thailand conclude, at which point Malaysia will assume the presidency of the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF).

The Sarawak Stadium in Petra Jaya will begin a major renovation.
The President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, emphasized that the previously proposed list of 38 sports was only provisional. According to him, as the body responsible for organizing the Multi-Sport Games in Malaysia, the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Malaysia has a responsibility to protect and ensure the interests of the SEA Games, the SEAGF member National Olympic Committees, and the entire Olympic Movement in the region.
At the final council meeting of the SEAGF for the 2023-2025 term, Mr. Mohamad Norza also presented a progress report on the 34th SEA Games. This Games is scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Penang, and Johor, from September 18-29, 2027.
Previously, Minister for Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh announced that Athletics, Badminton, Football, Hockey, and Karate were among the 38 sports slated to be included in the list for the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia.
Sarawak allocates RM 350 million for preparations for the 2027 SEA Games.
Sarawak has committed a substantial budget of 350 million ringgit to host 17 sporting events and the opening ceremony of the 2027 Southeast Asian Games. Minister for Youth, Sports and Enterprise Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, stated that this funding will cover a range of activities, from comprehensive promotional initiatives, training and coordination of working committees, to the provision of high-quality sports equipment. All items must meet the stringent technical and competition standards set by the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF), ensuring the Games are held at the highest level.
He emphasized that the Sarawak Stadium will host the Opening Ceremony, an event that is not only symbolically significant but also highlights the state's capabilities and provides a platform to showcase its culture, unity, and progress. This important event is expected to generate long-term socio -economic benefits through the promotion of tourism, media coverage, and active community participation. Simultaneously, planned stadium upgrades will solidify its legacy as a leading regional competition venue.
In other news, Abdul Karim stated that Sarawak is continuing to solidify its position as Malaysia's leading sporting powerhouse. This is achieved through targeted development of athletes, coaches, and support systems. He explained that priority sports have been identified across the state, supported by a range of strategies. These strategies include systematically identifying talent within schools and clubs, organizing high-intensity training, increasing exposure to major competitions, and continuously upgrading the Integrated Sports Management System (IGMS).
Currently, the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) operates a total of 290 Sports Development Centers, employing 5,983 athletes and 295 coaches. Throughout this year, the SSC has implemented diverse development programs across various sports, bolstered by ongoing coach education initiatives and talent scouting activities.
Mr. Abdul Karim also informed that a total of 54 Sarawak athletes have been selected to represent Malaysia at the 33rd SEA Games in 2025 in Thailand, competing in various sports.
Sarawak stadium upgraded in preparation for the 2027 SEA Games.
The Sarawak Stadium at Petra Jaya will begin a major upgrade in January 2026 and is expected to be completed in June 2027, in time for the opening ceremony of the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in September of the same year.
Sarawak's Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, confirmed that the Malaysian government has approved the opening ceremony in Kuching, with the Sarawak Stadium as the main venue. He stated that the winning bidder will receive the letter of acceptance before the end of this year, and the renovation work must be completed before June 2027, as the SEA Games will take place in September.
Recently, Abdul Karim led a delegation to attend the SEA Games in Thailand. This trip aimed to learn valuable lessons about the operation and management of multi-sport events, with the goal of applying these lessons to hosting the Games in 2027. The Sarawak Cabinet has approved the necessary budget for both organizing the Games and upgrading facilities.
The main organizing committee for the Games is headed by Sarawak Deputy Secretary Datu Hii Chang Kee. This is the same team that was entrusted with running last year's Malaysian Games (Sukma). Although the responsibility this time is greater because it is a regional/international event, Abdul Karim expressed absolute confidence in the team's management capabilities.
