Manchester City's official website announced the decision to rename the North Stand at the Etihad Stadium to "The Pep Guardiola Stand," and to erect a statue in honor of the Spanish strategist after his spectacularly successful period with the team.
The announcement comes as Guardiola prepares to leave Man City after 10 years in charge of the club. The match against Aston Villa on May 24th will be the first time the new stands are officially put into use, and also Guardiola's last home game as head coach of the Manchester team.
The North Stand expansion project began in late 2023, adding over 7,000 seats to the Etihad Stadium and raising its total capacity to over 61,000 spectators. Additionally, Man City confirmed they will erect a statue of Guardiola outside the stadium, alongside those of club legends such as Vincent Kompany, David Silva, and Sergio Aguero.
At a press conference on May 22nd, Guardiola admitted he was deeply moved by the news from the club's management. The Spanish coach said that President Khaldoon Al Mubarak had personally called to inform him of the decision.
“I don’t know what to say. It’s very special. I like the feeling that my energy and spirit will always remain here,” Guardiola shared.
Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour also heaped praise on Pep Guardiola, asserting that the 55-year-old strategist not only brought trophies but also completely transformed the team's identity.
During his 10 years managing Man City, Guardiola transformed the team into a dominant force in English football, winning 20 titles across various competitions.
