Nguyen Van Binh's woodworking shop, owned by the Conomi souvenir shop in Thanh Khe ward, isn't very large, just big enough for a work desk, a few wooden shelves against the wall, and a laser cutting machine neatly placed in the corner. On the desk, thin pieces of wood lie still, waiting to be assembled. Binh picks up each piece, turning it over and over, examining it. Some details require him to pause for quite a while. Not because they're difficult, but because he doesn't feel they're quite right, or even a slight deviation would ruin the image he has in mind.
According to Mr. Binh, after the machine cutting process is complete, each detail is sanded smooth to create a refined finish, then assembled manually to produce 2D and 3D products. The idea of crafting souvenirs based on famous landmarks in Da Nang came to him several years ago. He chose plywood as the material, while some specific products, such as the bronze drum pattern and small keychains, must be made from natural wood to achieve aesthetically pleasing carvings.
The first product he poured his heart and soul into was a model of the Han River Bridge carved from wood. From that first product, his small workshop gradually filled with familiar models of the city, such as the winding Dragon Bridge, the Tran Thi Ly Bridge casting its shadow at night, the Son Tra Peninsula, the Marble Mountains, the Chicken Church, the Mother Nhu Monument, the Da Nang Museum, and more.
Each model is a miniature slice of Da Nang, encapsulated within each piece of wood. According to him, when scaling down the models, many details must be omitted, retaining only the core features. The most difficult part is not making them look exactly alike, but ensuring that people recognize the soul of the product.
Over time, more and more customers came to the workshop. Some were souvenir shop owners. Others were curious tourists visiting. There were also people from Da Nang who wanted to order a custom model as a gift. During peak tourist season, the workshop operated almost around the clock.
What sets Binh's product line apart is its aesthetic appeal, deeply rooted in culture and history. For him, each complete model must meet three criteria: reasonable price, aesthetic appeal, and portability.
Become part of the tourism ecosystem.
In the tourism trend, handcrafted products with strong local characteristics are becoming increasingly popular. Ms. Ho Thi Nhuc, Head of the Bamboo Tube Sausage Cooperative in Cam Le Ward, always strives to include this traditional dish as a souvenir for tourists.
Having been involved in the sausage-making business for many years, Ms. Nhực realized that, besides flavor, packaging plays a crucial role. The bamboo-tube sausage has now been improved in terms of processing, preservation, and packaging to make it suitable as a gift to take away. After the success with beef sausage, she and her husband continued to produce veal sausage, shrimp sausage, etc., with a frozen storage time of up to 6 months.
Each Cocimo-branded bamboo tube sausage product from her family comes with information about the traditional craft village, how to enjoy it, and the story behind its creation. This is also a way for tourists to understand and appreciate the value of a culinary gift, rather than just buying it to try it out of curiosity.
Following this trend, many Da Nang specialty product manufacturers are gradually reinventing themselves to adapt to modern tourism trends. From fish sauce, dried seafood, and processed seafood to OCOP (One Commune One Product) products, there is increased attention to quality, design, and convenience. Small, compact gift packages, easy to carry, imbued with the flavors of the sea, symbolism, or everyday life of the local people, are gradually becoming the preferred choice for tourists.
From a tourism development perspective, Mr. Nguyen Duc Quynh, Chairman of the Da Nang Hotel Association, believes that souvenirs and local specialties are the "final touchpoint" but have a long-lasting anchor in the tourist's experience.
Because for a destination to be memorable, it cannot rely solely on scenery or accommodation services; it needs sophisticated products that tell the story of that place. And when tourists bring a gift home, it's also a way for the image of Da Nang to continue spreading in their daily lives.
"With this consumer trend, the important thing is not to produce a lot of goods, but to select and invest in unique products. When local products become part of the tourism ecosystem, they contribute to economic value and brand positioning of the destination," Mr. Quynh affirmed.
