Green consciousness takes root in every home
It is not just a story of planting a few more pots of plants, but a journey of people joining hands to preserve a civilized lifestyle, starting from each residential area. In that journey, there is the hard work of members of the Front at all levels, organizations, businesses, and most of all, from the simple hands of people who volunteer to beautify the place where they live.
Without waiting for anyone to check or remind, the story of “self-management” has become a natural way of life in many neighborhoods in Ho Chi Minh City. What makes that change is largely due to the people themselves, those who directly live, directly enjoy, and also directly see the value of a green - clean - civilized lifestyle in their residential areas. In that journey, there are people who have always been willing to contribute to the common work for many years.
Mrs. Bui Thi Phuong, Head of Residential Area No. 7, Con Dao Special Zone, stands out with her agile figure and hands that are used to work, and is one of those characters. While trimming flowers, she said: “We want to contribute to the Congress of the Vietnam Fatherland Front of Ho Chi Minh City. It is not only a festival for Front officials but also an opportunity for each residential area to reflect on itself: what have they done for the community, how have they contributed to the green - clean - beautiful island...”.
Ms. Phuong's residential area has more than 2,000 people, many of whom come from the mainland. Here, the model of "Bright - Green - Clean - Beautiful Residential Area" quickly spread. People contributed working days, others brought seedlings, businesses supported excavators to clear the old landfill and level the ground, and the whole neighborhood planted flowers together. Every year, more than 1,300 working days and dozens of general cleaning sessions are carried out.
People say that the flowers beautify the village roads, but what is more beautiful is the connection. Some old people sit out in the early morning sun to watch the flowers bloom. Children gather to water the plants in the afternoon. People from other places who come to Con Dao also consider planting flowers and cleaning as natural as eating and sleeping.
For Ms. Phuong, the greatest reward is not the number of flowers blooming, but the green consciousness that has taken root in each house. She smiled gently: “Cleaning up in front of the door, planting a flower bush, limiting plastic products…, each house a little, the city will naturally become beautiful.”
Not only on remote islands, in the inner city of Ho Chi Minh City, green is also being revived from the smallest things. Alley 212/1 Thoai Ngoc Hau (Phu Thanh ward) is filled with children's laughter every afternoon. Green Energy Park, which used to be a land overgrown with weeds, is now a community activity spot with swings, stone benches, a children's play area, a solar lighting system and free wifi.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Phong, 60 years old, took her grandchildren for a walk, patting the swing frame as she walked: “Since the park was built, the children love it. The adults are also healthier, greet each other, and talk more.”
To have that park, the Ward Youth Union Standing Committee coordinated with the Ward 5 Executive Board to mobilize the people. More than 370 youth union members and residents contributed to breaking down old fences, clearing grass, leveling the ground, and planting trees. The Ward Youth Union also made 4 murals about the environment, renovated flower beds, planted 40 trees, installed exercise equipment, installed solar lights, and gave more than 100 patriotic house number plates to households around the park.
The most important thing is the management: the project was handed over to the Party cell and the neighborhood, members were assigned to be in charge of cameras, checking the lighting system. The park was formed and handed over to the community to join hands in preserving it.
Clean alley, happy people
Going further northeast of the city, Phu Thuan neighborhood (Phu An ward) is changing day by day. The present clean and spacious streets hardly recall the image of a few years ago, when grass grew thick and rubbish was scattered in corners that few people paid attention to.
Over the weekend, more than 150 officials, members, youth union members and residents worked together to clean up, clear bushes, collect trash, and remove illegal billboards. The newly planted flowers were taken care of by the residents themselves: one family pruned the branches, another watered the trees, and children picked up fallen leaves...
The yellow flowers, bougainvillea, and roses brighten up the whole neighborhood. People say jokingly: “When the alley is clean, the people are happy.”

What is special is that the change is not only in the landscape but also in awareness. Ms. Nguy Thi Chau Giang, Secretary of the Phu Thuan Ward Party Cell, commented: "When people consider environmental protection as their responsibility, the beauty will last."
Her neighbor, Mr. Nguyen Van Dong added: “In the past, the alley had a lot of trash. Now, every house sweeps a little bit, no one litters anymore. Looking at the clean alley, I suddenly feel sorry for the neighborhood.”
The embankments along the Saigon River that used to have garbage piled up are now covered in green thanks to the continuous clean-up by organizations and people.
In 5 years, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Phu An Ward and the neighborhoods have registered to manage 20 green - clean - beautiful streets and alleys, implementing the model "Roads of solidarity and unity". Especially the movement "Each person plants 1 tree - Each household contributes 1 green area" has helped plant more than 33,000 trees, a number that shows that the people's strength is mobilized in the right rhythm.
Another bright spot in the journey to preserve green habits is Ngai Giao commune, where the movement of the entire people participating in environmental protection has spread to every village and every household. From considering environmental protection as the responsibility of the government, people now consider it their right. Every household sorts garbage, limits the use of plastic bags, and regularly participates in “Green Sunday”.
The result is bright, green, clean, and beautiful roads connecting one another. The 6.4km apricot blossom road was recognized by the Vietnam Records Institute as the longest yellow apricot blossom road in the country, becoming the pride of the locality, and also a testament to the strength of the community when sharing a common goal.
In Long Huong ward, Mrs. Dau Thi Vinh initiated the “green home basket” herself, encouraging people to throw away plastic bottles and iron cans in the right place. At first, people were hesitant, but after a few months, everyone saw a clear reduction in trash. “If we want a green neighborhood, each house must be green first,” said Mrs. Vinh.
In the late afternoon, the solar lights at the Green Energy Park turn on; in Con Dao, the ten o’clock bushes close their petals; in Phu Thuan, people linger beside the flowers that have just been watered… All of this creates a city full of vitality and hope.
