Mbappe is being criticized for being lazy in pressing. |
Kylian Mbappe has never lacked goals, but that's no longer enough to protect him from the growing doubts at Real Madrid. When a team strives for perfection in every aspect, statistics on off-ball movement become a hard-to-hide "blind spot."
A report from CIES Football Observatory places Mbappe fifth on the list of players who move the least when their team doesn't have possession, based on data from 46 leagues. Above him are Lionel Messi, Artem Dzyuba, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Sebastián Villa.
This figure isn't just a statistic. It reflects a systemic problem. In modern football, pressing is no longer an option but a foundation. When an attacking player isn't involved in the pressing process, the entire tactical structure is stretched.
That's the paradox of Mbappe at Real Madrid. He still scores goals, still makes a difference in crucial moments. But when the team loses possession, his presence is almost invisible. This forces the lines behind him to compensate more, undermining the balance that is vital in big matches.
Previously, Thibaut Courtois and Mbappe were considered Real Madrid's two most reliable pillars of defense. One guarded the goal, the other decided the game. But when the team failed to rediscover the winning form in major competitions, every detail came under scrutiny, and Mbappe was no longer outside the realm of debate.

Mbappe always defends less than the others. |
The question isn't whether Mbappe is talented or not. That's obvious. The issue is whether he's willing to adapt to a system that demands greater sacrifice. Recent European champions have operated on the principle that every player must participate in defense, at least at a minimum level.
Mbappe himself doesn't shy away from the reality. He admits that he "defends less than others" and sees it as an area for improvement. This frankness is commendable, but in a demanding environment like Real Madrid, awareness alone isn't enough. What's needed is change on the pitch.
The pressure is mounting over time. As he approaches 28, Mbappe has less room for experimentation. He needs major trophies, a clear role in the system, and, more importantly, he needs to prove that he is not just a striker, but a complete part of the team.
Real Madrid might accept a superstar who doesn't press in the short term. But to build a sustainable winning machine, they need more than that. And that's the problem Mbappe must solve if he wants to become the true centerpiece of the team.
