Sony Pictures' "The Garfield Movie" was the "king" at North American theaters last week.
According to statistics from Exhibitor Relations, in its second week of release, the movie about a lazy cat who loves to eat lasagna earned 14 million USD.
Garfield is the most famous cartoon cat and is associated with the childhood of millions of children of all generations around the world.
After the resounding success of the two films “Garfield: The Movie” (2004) and “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties” (2006), the story of the cat Garfield returns to the big screen audience through the film “The Garfield Movie” (film title shown in Vietnam: "Super naughty fat cat" ).
This time back, the cheese-loving fat cat makes the audience laugh out loud with a series of humorous stories revolving around his brand new adventure.
The film, directed by Mark Dindal, revolves around the life of Garfield (voiced by Chris Pratt).
One day, the cat gets caught up in a robbery to help his biological father Vic (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson), escape the sights of Jinx (Hannah Waddingham) - a Persian cat who wants revenge on Vic.
To save his father, Garfield and his dog Odie (Harvey Guillén) have only 72 hours to join Vic on a risky mission.
The film's plot is simple, with many absurd details that bring humor.
Garfield, who has long been accustomed to enjoying life, is suddenly kidnapped by Jinx's group. On the way, he begs for his life, reciting his boss's bank account number so that the criminals can take the money and let him go home.
However, Jinx's purpose in capturing the main character is not for money but to lure Garfield's father to save his son, forcing both of them to steal a milk truck.
While trying to figure out how to get into the Lactose farm, Garfield and Vic meet Otto the cow (Ving Rhames), who was once the company's mascot, and trains him in the skills to infiltrate Lactose.
As for Garfield, he thought that Vic abandoned him years ago, so he was angry when he met his father again. Vic always wanted a chance to explain the misunderstanding, and at the same time secretly followed his son.
Through situations, the relationship between Vic and Garfield gradually resolves.
Throughout his adventures, Garfield faces many challenges and learns lessons about family values and friendship.
Even though he is pampered and fed to his heart's content, the cat still has to learn to grow up. At the same time, the love and care of family and relatives will erase grudges, helping Garfield mature in life.
In "The Garfield Movie," each character has a personality and story that is carefully constructed, close, and most importantly, has the ability to make people laugh endlessly.
The film is also topping the global box office, with a total revenue of 152.2 million USD. Observers say Garfield will dominate the market until "Inside Out 2" is released on June 14./.
