Central region: Evacuate people, actively drain water to prevent flooding due to heavy rain

The National Steering Committee for Civil Defense has asked localities in the Central region to proactively prepare plans to evacuate people and drain water to prevent flooding in the face of the risk of heavy rain in the coming days.

Hue City issued an order to regulate Binh Dien hydroelectric reservoir (upstream of Huong River) from November 12 to proactively respond to heavy rains in the coming days.

On November 13, the National Civil Defense Steering Committee sent a dispatch to the People's Committees of provinces and cities from Quang Tri to Khanh Hoa to be ready to respond to new floods that may occur due to extreme weather.

According to the document, in recent times, the Central region has experienced prolonged heavy rains causing historic floods, serious damage to people, property, infrastructure and socio -economic activities; currently, provinces and cities are still focusing on overcoming the consequences.

Meanwhile, according to the forecast of the meteorological agency, from the night of November 15 to November 18, the area from Hue to Gia Lai will have heavy rain with common rainfall of 250-500mm, locally over 700mm; the southern area of ​​Quang Tri, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa provinces will have common rain of 150-300mm, locally over 400mm.

Then, from November 19, widespread heavy rain is likely to continue to occur in the area from Da Nang to Khanh Hoa.

Heavy rain can cause flooding in low-lying areas, urban and industrial areas; flash floods in small rivers and streams; and landslides on steep slopes.

To proactively respond to heavy rains, floods, landslides, and flash floods, the National Steering Committee for Civil Defense requests the People's Committees of the localities mentioned in the dispatch to promptly and fully inform local authorities and people to proactively prevent and avoid; at the same time, continue to mobilize all resources to urgently overcome the consequences of recent natural disasters.

The National Steering Committee for Civil Defense also requested to proactively organize the relocation and evacuation of people to safe places; proactively take measures to drain water to prevent flooding and protect production, industrial parks, urban areas, and residential areas; ensure safety for key works, works under construction, small reservoirs that are full of water, mining areas, and mineral exploitation; proactively operate the discharge of reservoir water to prioritize flood reduction capacity for downstream areas.
