Dr. Chu Duy Ly currently works at the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU-HCM. The young man who used to look like a rocker with long, neatly tied hair and an athletic physique has chosen a serious academic path.
Cross-border learning
There are journeys that start from seemingly small things: a stamp, a comic book page or an unfamiliar melody. For Chu Duy Ly, childhood has become the foundation for a far-reaching academic career, where national borders are only the connecting point of endless streams of knowledge.

Born into a multicultural family of Kinh - Ede - Jrai in Buon Ma Thuot, Dak Lak province - the land of the Central Highlands mountains and forests, Duy Ly was passionate and curious about exploring the world since childhood. The stamp collection associated with images of faraway places stimulated the imagination and urged the highland boy to seek knowledge. Along with that was his love for classical Chinese literature, Soviet novels, Japanese comics, American cartoons and even Western music . Those pieces opened his "global perspective" very early.

In 2005, Duy Ly majored in International Relations at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU-HCM. He won many research awards, scholarships and extracurricular activities. After that, he continued to study for a master's degree in International Studies at VNU-Hanoi, graduating with honors and being the double valedictorian of the course. "I used to think I was not suited to be a scholar" - Duy Ly said, but the encouragement from his supervisor, Professor Hoang Khac Nam (former Head of the Faculty of International Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU-Hanoi) and his first experiences as a teaching assistant at the Faculty of International Relations, University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU-HCM and the University of Economics and Law - VNU-HCM gave him the confidence to continue.
Duy Ly's most valuable milestone is the joint doctoral scholarship program between the National University of Singapore and Harvard - Yenching Institute (HYI), under the guidance of Professor Bruce M. Lockhart. From 2020 to 2022, he is one of the rare Vietnamese scholars attending Harvard University (USA). For him, scientific research is to create new knowledge values for humanity.
Interesting school phenomenon
Despite his busy international research activities, Chu Duy Ly has never neglected his commitment to the classroom. For over 12 years, he has imparted knowledge and inspired many generations of students to strive for excellence. With an engaging teaching style that always incorporates practical experience and multidimensional knowledge, Duy Ly is remembered by students as a young, open-minded and inspirational teacher.
Even the extremely interesting "school phenomenon" is that students have established a Fanclub for Mr. Duy Ly. The young people do this with warm and sincere feelings, because they are so impressed with the different teaching style, the solid knowledge foundation expressed very closely and easily understood by the 8X lecturer. Indeed, Chu Duy Ly believes that teachers not only impart knowledge but also open the "door" for students to grow up on their own. His students actively participate in research, are encouraged to debate and engage outside the school campus.
Tran Thi Thuc Huyen - a former student of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU-HCM, a graduate student at the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies, Waseda University (Japan) - still remembers deeply the memories of Professor Chu Duy Ly: "Professor Ly is the person who guided me in doing scientific research, is a lecturer in the subject of Global Issues with a solid theoretical foundation and always guides students to find new ways of thinking when approaching problems. Thanks to the process of studying with him, I decided to study for a master's degree in Japan to be able to become a lecturer like him in the future" - Huyen confided.
Dr. Duy Ly also participated in many international programs: peacebuilding course at Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute in the Philippines; Science, Technology and Society Training Scholarship Program at Tsinghua University (China) sponsored by Harvard - Yenching Institute and Tsinghua University, to exchange activities such as Professional Scholar Exchange Program on request to policy research agencies at George Washington University sponsored by the US Department of State, Ship for Japan and Southeast Asian Youth Program (SSEAYP)... Proficiency in English, intermediate level of Chinese, being able to communicate in Japanese and French are strengths that help Duy Ly expand his academic access.
His scientific publications include monographs on international relations, scientific articles on cyber security, feminism and regional political history. Many of his articles are currently under international review in high-ranking journals such as Journal of Asian Studies (Cambridge), Journal of Southeast Asian Studies (Cambridge), Journal of Vietnamese Studies (UC Berkeley). He not only writes in English but also has many works written in Vietnamese, with the desire to bring academic research closer to domestic readers.
From a boy in the Central Highlands stepping out into the world, Dr. Chu Duy Ly's journey is one of persistent and steadfast effort. He has become a vivid and convincing example for his students to be more confident in their choices. Many of his students have made their names on the international academic map at prestigious schools and made practical contributions to their homeland and community.
