Talking with Ms. Chamaleá Thị Duy, President of the Women's Union of Phuoc Chinh commune, we learned that the project of raising sheep for reproduction according to the value chain has investment capital from the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction for the period 2021-2025, which is 1,490 million VND and counterpart capital from the people is 413 million VND. Implemented from October 2023, the Program provides financial support to help 32 poor and near-poor households living in Suoi Kho, Nui Ray, and Suoi Ro villages create livelihoods to escape poverty sustainably.
People were supported with roofing sheets for cages and provided with 32 breeding rams and 448 breeding ewes. Each household was supported with 1 ram and 14 breeding ewes. Families participating in the project were instructed on techniques for raising and preventing diseases for sheep. Quang Khanh Agricultural Development Cooperative signed a contract to stably consume meat products for sheep raising households. Sheep raising is carried out according to a semi-intensive farm model suitable to local conditions, both confining them with supplementary feed and grazing them on natural pastures.
Ms. Chamaleá Thị Duy led us to visit the families participating in the sheep farming model in Nui Ray village. We were really impressed with the sheep barns which were built high, sturdy and airy. After stopping to add pellet feed to the trough for the sheep, Ms. Kadá Thị Kim excitedly said that her family received support from the Women's Union of Ninh Thuan province to provide 15 breeding sheep. After nearly a year of care, feeding and fully vaccinating against infectious diseases, the flock gave birth to 6 lambs, including 3 males and 3 females. The lambs were carefully raised and cared for, and now weigh 10-12 kg/lamb.
Ms. Kim plans to keep 3 female sheep for breeding to supplement the flock, selling 3 male sheep for over 3 million VND, the current price of male sheep for breeding is 75-80 thousand VND/kg. Just the source of selling sheep manure to traders who buy at the barn helps her earn an additional income of 500-600 thousand VND/month. The biggest asset of Ms. Kim's family, currently is a flock of 21 sheep, which she diligently takes care of to generate income to develop the family economy , raise her children to study, and escape poverty sustainably.
Leaving the sheep pen of Ms. Kadá Thị Kim, we visited the family of Ms. Pinang Thị Tuệ at the end of Nui Ray village. The young mother was holding her baby while preparing to take the sheep to graze in the pasture under the canopy of the forest around her house. Ms. Tuệ said that, like other women participating in the Project, her family was supported with 15 breeding sheep. Ms. Tuệ's family's sheep were raised in a basic barn, with a straw storage area, and a trough for additional food and water. The sheep gave birth to 11 lambs, and she sold 6 lambs for 7.5 million VND. Combined with selling sheep manure, she has an income of over 800 thousand VND/month.
Ms. Tue excitedly shared: “In the past, my family's economy was very difficult, thanks to the income from the sheep, life has become more and more stable. I grow 2 sao of grass, provide more green food and supplement with nutritional pellets, and fully vaccinate according to the instructions of the local veterinary.”
Ms. Chamaléa Thi Duy, President of the Women's Union of Phuoc Chinh Commune, added that the sheep farming model of women's union members in Phuoc Chinh Commune has initially promoted the effectiveness of investment capital. Families all have stable income from selling lambs and sheep manure. The Women's Union of the Commune continues to coordinate with specialized agencies to promote propaganda work, raise people's awareness in managing and effectively using State support capital to implement the sheep farming model; Mobilize households participating in the project to properly implement vaccination, clean barns, plant grass, ensure adequate supply of green food for sheep, and at the same time cooperate with Quang Khanh Agricultural Development Cooperative to stably consume sheep products to ensure stable prices, and enhance the value chain for livestock households.
