Pa Khom is one of the six border villages of Long Phieng commune. Following the officers of the Chieng Tuong Border Guard Post back to visit the village, we felt the changes here. The road leading to the village is now more convenient than before; on the hillsides, the villagers are harvesting plums. Life is changing for the better, and the people in the village are actively participating in protecting the border and boundary markers.
Mr. Phang Lao Chanh, Party Secretary and Head of Pa Khom village, said: The village's border and boundary marker self-management team was established in 2016 with 82 members. The team meets once a month, and whenever there is a patrol schedule, the members proactively arrange their family affairs to participate with the border guards in cleaning and clearing the border and boundary markers, and encourage everyone to strictly abide by the regulations on the land border, not to cross the border illegally, and not to encroach on or settle in neighboring countries.
Long Phieng currently has 6 border and boundary marker self-management groups with over 500 households participating, managing nearly 23 km of border along with 10 national border markers and 1 boundary post. Since the beginning of the year, the self-management groups have coordinated with border guards to organize many patrols, clear vegetation along the border, and inspect the boundary marker system.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Cong Luu, Political Officer of Chieng Tuong Border Guard Station, said: "We focus on disseminating information and mobilizing people to participate in self-governance models for border areas and boundary markers. Through this, people not only improve their legal awareness but also proactively cooperate with border guards in protecting sovereignty and maintaining security and order in the area. In addition to maintaining 6 self-governance groups for border areas and boundary markers, the unit also assigns 22 Party members to be in charge of 64 households in the commune and implements the '3 close ties, 4 together' approach, helping people develop the economy and alleviate poverty; and assigns 24 Party members to participate in activities at 12 village Party branches."
The model of self-governing border and boundary marker groups has also played a significant role in the fight against drug trafficking and other crimes; many valuable pieces of information related to security and order have been promptly provided by the people to the authorities. Since the beginning of the year, Chieng Tuong Border Guard Station has spearheaded the arrest and prosecution of two cases involving two drug offenders, seizing 130 synthetic drug pills, 1.09 grams of heroin, and two motorbikes; persuaded people to surrender one homemade gun; and handled one case of illegal cross-border smuggling.
Mr. Lu Van Chung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Long Phieng commune, said: "Through the model of self-governing border and boundary marker groups, people are increasingly raising their sense of responsibility in protecting territorial sovereignty and complying well with the Party's guidelines and the State's policies and laws. Members of the groups also actively propagate and encourage people not to listen to bad people, not to abet illegal activities, and to work together to build peaceful villages."
Amidst the vast borderlands, the patrol footsteps of soldiers and civilians continue to steadily extend along the border lines. Each border marker is maintained not only through the responsibility of specialized forces but also through the awareness, solidarity, and patriotism of the people in the border region. The model of self-governing border and marker management groups today is becoming an important pillar in building a solid all-people border defense posture, contributing to maintaining peace on the nation's frontier.
