Lemon cultivation model along the Chay River.

Mr. Sung Seo Sang is delighted that this year's four-season lemon crop is bountiful.

At this time, the family of Mr. Sung Seo Sang, with over 300 four-season lemon trees, is beginning its harvest season. To have a bountiful harvest of beautiful, high-quality fruit, Mr. Sang has diligently cared for the trees and proactively prevented diseases using proper techniques. "In the early years of planting, we encountered many pests and diseases, and disease prevention was quite difficult. Last year and this year have been better. The quantity supplied to the market is still very small compared to the current yield from the orchard; sometimes customers call frequently, but we always run out of stock. After a period of planting, I see high economic efficiency, so I'm planning to expand the scale next year," said Mr. Sung Seo Sang, from Thao Chu Phin village, Thao Chu Phin commune, Si Ma Cai district.

When Sang and his wife brought the four-season lemon tree to plant on their less productive corn-growing land in 2020, they had many concerns and anxieties, as it was a new crop. However, boldly changing their approach, the family decided to invest in planting it, proactively learning and applying techniques to its care. Fortunately, the four-season lemon tree is well-suited to the local soil and climate, developing well, reaching a height of 1.5-2 meters, spreading widely, and bearing abundant fruit. It is estimated that this harvest will yield about 3 tons of fruit, bringing high economic value and opening a new direction for local economic development. "Currently, the price of lemons is 25,000 VND/kg. However, the price fluctuates throughout the year, with the lowest being 10,000 VND/kg, and ranging from 10,000 VND to 30,000 VND/kg. Compared to traditional crops like corn, the economic benefits are higher because corn only yields one harvest, while lemon trees yield four harvests per year," said Ms. Giang Thi Lien, from Thao Chu Phin village, Thao Chu Phin commune, Si Ma Cai district.

The four-season lemon tree is well-suited to the soil and climate of Thào Chư Phìn commune.

Mr. Hoang Seo Din, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thao Chu Phin commune, Si Ma Cai district, said: "This lemon cultivation model is very suitable. We hope that the specialized departments of the district will review these practical models and approve investment plans for expansion, so that next year we can include them in the commune's resolutions, programs, and projects to invest in the people, helping to alleviate poverty in the area."

Along the winding Chay River, nestled amidst mountains and forests, the four-season lemon orchard of Mr. Sung Seo Sang's family is thriving, bearing abundant fruit, bringing joy and optimism, contributing to increased income and poverty reduction for the local people.
