Luka Modric underwent successful surgery after suffering a serious facial injury during AC Milan's 0-0 draw against Juventus in Serie A's 34th round on April 27th. The 40-year-old midfielder collided heavily with Manuel Locatelli in an aerial challenge. Modric tried to play through the pain but was forced to leave the field with only 10 minutes remaining.
Subsequent tests confirmed he had fractured his left cheekbone and required immediate surgery. According to the club, the surgery went smoothly at the La Madonnina clinic in Milan. The club also wished the Croatian captain a speedy recovery in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.
The injury came at a sensitive time for Modric, as he was preparing for his fifth and likely last World Cup.
Croatia's head coach, Zlatko Dalic, expressed optimism: "I spoke with Luka. I believe he will do everything he can to be ready for the World Cup. We will provide maximum support and believe the recovery process will go according to plan."
Croatia is in the same group as England, Ghana, and Panama. Their opening match is on June 17th, so Modric still has about seven weeks to race against time. If he recovers in time, the veteran midfielder will most likely have to wear a carbon fiber protective mask, a common practice for players recovering from facial injuries.
Meanwhile, Modric's club season is almost over. Milan are currently third in Serie A with only four rounds remaining. Given the recovery time after surgery, the former Real Madrid star's chances of playing for the remainder of the season are very low.
