"Earning hundreds of millions of dong a month is easy...!"
Sitting and chatting with friends after work, Th, an employee of a well-known securities company in Ho Chi Minh City, never had a moment's peace. Three phones in his pocket constantly rang. He'd put one down and pick up another to answer questions about stock prices or advise his "regular clients"—investors who should sell some stocks and buy more. Turning to us, Th smiled and confided: "Since I started this job, the income is high, but I'm always busy. Even when I'm about to fall asleep in the middle of the night, I get disturbed. Many investors, anxious about the unpredictable fluctuations in stock prices, call me for advice…"
Having previously held the position of head of credit at a state-owned bank in Ho Chi Minh City, Th decided to quit four years ago and join a securities company that needed experienced financial analysts. While working, he diligently studied and obtained additional training certificates from the State Securities Commission (SSC), and now Th has become a professional stock broker. Th boasts that he earns hundreds of millions of dong a month effortlessly. Recently, the stock market has become like a magnet attracting investors with a desire to get rich, and Th's profession has flourished. Besides earning a substantial fixed salary from investors, Th boasts that he sometimes pockets tens of millions of dong in bonuses a day for quickly "leaking information" that helps investors make big profits.
Mr. Hoang, the head of the sales department at a state-owned company, who has been investing in stocks for many years, confided: "I'm so overwhelmed with the company's business that I can't go to the stock exchange and quickly grasp which stocks are changing color, going up or down. Therefore, I have to hire an employee from a securities company to update information, text me, and call me daily so I can make timely buying and selling decisions." Typically, employees – these stock brokers – act as intermediaries and advisors for dozens of investors. In addition to their fixed salary of over 10 million VND/month, they also earn hundreds of millions of VND from brokerage and advisory deals for investors.
Alongside the professional brokers working at securities companies are amateur stock brokers, often colloquially known as "stock brokers." This unprofessional group is present everywhere, from trading floors to sidewalks, workplaces, and businesses. Although they don't openly operate, they contribute to "disrupting" the stock market through insider information or intentionally causing harm to certain stocks. Having held the position of chief accountant for a well-known import-export company in Ho Chi Minh City, Hang decided to quit her job and invest in a new business venture – the stock market.
With her knowledge and ability to anticipate promising stocks, Hang made a fortune. Besides trading stocks, Hang also acted as a stock broker and broker for OTC stocks. Hang boasted about her extensive network and access to valuable confidential information about companies and banks. Therefore, anyone wanting to buy or sell any type of stock or OTC stock of any company, from the smallest lots of a few dozen to large lots of tens of thousands of shares, Hang could immediately "match the order."
Professional advice: Where are you located?
The stock market in Vietnam is relatively new but has developed at a phenomenal pace. From just a few securities companies, there are now over 50 operating nationwide, and the official brokerage fee revenue of these entities also increased rapidly in late 2006 and early 2007. Following the general trend of the global market, the buying and selling of securities will mainly take place within securities companies.
According to the Securities Law and Government Decree No. 14, public companies must be listed on the stock exchange, and the buying and selling of OTC shares must also be done through securities companies. Therefore, the demand for the development of securities companies and securities brokers will increase exponentially. When the stock market develops strongly, in addition to brokerage fees reaching tens of billions of VND per month, companies also earn a portion of their profits from investment advisory services to clients (depending on the agreed contract). This shows that the income from this profession is very attractive.
As a specialized profession, stock brokerage requires a high level of expertise, including the ability to analyze financial data, gather and predict stock market information quickly to advise clients on investments with the highest probability of success. While there is a huge demand for this profession, the Vietnam Securities Commission (SSC) is tightening entry requirements. To be legally qualified to practice, brokers must possess three training certificates from the SSC. Due to the limited training capacity of the SSC, thousands of financial professionals are still waiting in line to obtain all the necessary certificates to practice. Nevertheless, this profession remains attractive to many and is becoming one of the "hottest and most trendy" fields.
