On the afternoon of November 11, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Truong Canh Tuyen had a working session with principals of public and private universities in the city to listen to their opinions and contributions to the city's development.

School wants to open nursing home

Speaking to the city leaders, Dr. Nguyen Van Quang - Principal of Nam Can Tho University - said that the school's orientation by 2033 is to become Nam Can Tho University with many member schools, so there is a need to expand the land area to build a headquarters in the future.

Next, the school opened a health sector to train in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, laboratory technology, imaging technology, hospital management, etc., so it built the Nam Can Tho University Hospital with a scale of 300 beds. In the near future, it will invest in a scale of 1,000 beds, so there needs to be a plan for the school to build phase 2.

In particular, Mr. Quang said that the school wants to build a nursing home in the city, located in Phong Dien district (old) with a scale of about 100 hectares. "The school has a hospital, building a nursing home to attract elderly people to come there, at the same time we want to research eco -tourism for foreigners to come to Can Tho to both relax and visit the doctor", Mr. Quang proposed.

Meanwhile, the representative of FPT University's leadership also proposed that the city allocate land funds in the old Can Tho city area for the school to invest in an inter-level school (the school has invested in the old Soc Trang province and the old Hau Giang province).

The school commits that when it has land, it will quickly invest in an inter-level school and advanced programs here, contributing more to the achievements and movements of the city.

Associate Professor Dr. Tran Trung Tinh - Principal of Can Tho University - suggested that the city apply training orders, including training for teachers who are teaching general education in English to implement the roadmap to make English the second language in the city.

In addition, the city researches, sponsors, and assigns scientific research programs - large programs, not small projects - to create products linked with domestic and foreign businesses.

In addition, Mr. Tinh also suggested that the city ask the Central Government for a special mechanism on capital allocation for universities or interest-free loans so that schools have resources to invest in facilities, thereby reducing pressure on schools. According to Mr. Tinh, if there is such a policy, it will be very good, especially for public schools because they cannot borrow, because the school's assets are state assets that cannot be mortgaged.

Speaking at the meeting, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Truong Canh Tuyen said the meeting aimed to meet, discuss and ask for opinions from university leaders on a number of issues to serve the city's development in the coming time.

Mr. Tuyen said that the Standing Committee of Can Tho City Party Committee has assigned the City People's Committee to review, study and summarize Resolution 59 of 2020 of the Politburo on the development of Can Tho city to 2030, with a vision to 2045, and advise on amending Resolution 45 of 2022 of the National Assembly on specific mechanisms and policies for Can Tho city.

According to Mr. Tuyen, the implementation process has been more than 3 years and the results of implementing the policy mechanisms in Resolution 45 "are still very modest". There are still many contents that the city needs to consult and ask for opinions from the socio-cultural sector so that the upcoming special mechanism is synchronous and comprehensive in all socio-economic fields, in line with the goals of the resolution of the Can Tho City Party Congress for the 2025-2030 term and Resolution 59 of the Politburo mentioned above.

According to Mr. Tuyen, the city will invite scientists from all fields to participate as an advisory board to support the leaders of the City Party Committee and People's Committee in proposing resolutions as well as in the process of implementing projects, with the goal of how to develop the city in the coming time.
