Hope the Southeast riverside boulevard will soon become a reality

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên14/08/2023

As Thanh Nien just mentioned, not only stopping at the goal of effectively developing the Saigon River corridor and inner-city canals, Ho Chi Minh City is looking to connect a strip of boulevard from the Saigon River to the Dong Nai River, connecting the entire Southeast region.

This idea has been mentioned in the study to review, propose additions and adjustments to the planning of the Saigon River road by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport. At the same time, at a recent meeting between the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and the provinces of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Binh Duong , Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, Tay Ninh, the leaders of the localities agreed on the policy of proposing planning orientations along the Saigon River and Dong Nai River, connecting the Southeast region.

Ho Chi Minh City proposes a boulevard from Saigon River to Dong Nai River, connecting the entire Southeast region.

Speaking to Thanh Nien on the morning of August 11, Mr. Tran Quang Lam, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, said that the general direction is to make the most of the existing routes running along the Saigon River to plan the route flexibly, in accordance with the current situation and urban landscape along the river. The goal is to form a road along the Saigon River connecting the Southeast provinces, not only convenient in terms of traffic but also ensuring beautiful urban landscape, serving tourism , commensurate with the potential of the Saigon River.

Should be multi-purpose route

Evaluating that this planning vision will help effectively develop the Saigon River corridor on a regional linkage scale, reader (BD) Vanson Le also considers this a breakthrough idea: "I envision a riverside boulevard like a highway. Not only will it create a new urban space, but it will also lead to the development of all aspects of the socio-economics of the southern region". BD Van Dong Nguyen also suggested that if it is included in the planning vision, it is necessary to go ahead and anticipate the scale: "We should accurately estimate the traffic volume on this route, in my opinion, we should build 8 lanes. Don't be like the bridges and roads that were built before, when they were completed, they were overloaded several times".

The idea of an economic and cultural connecting avenue brings a lot of excitement, however, some people think that "the flow of the road needs to lean towards tourism". People's Committee Duc Tri Nguyen commented: "Why wait for this connecting route to be a highway? I think the riverside road should be a road for tourism, with much greater meaning than a road just for circulation".

In this train of thought, Duc Tri Nguyen continued to imagine: "Along this road, on one side are restaurants, hotels, entertainment areas, parking lots, parks, on the other side is the riverbank with an underground drainage system to prevent flooding, a wide sidewalk with rows of trees, stone benches, a marina...".

Chairman Truong Cong Doan commented: "The proposal is reasonable. If realized, it will open up a new route for development along the river." Most of the members hope that the idea of a riverside boulevard connecting the entire Southeast region will soon become a reality.

Need a connection mechanism

If considering Ho Chi Minh City's proposal as a regional connectivity idea, Real Estate Thang Nguyen said: "There needs to be a mechanism to connect capital and planning to be able to carry out the extension of the route in a uniform and simultaneous manner."

Mr. Le also said that the most worrying thing about planning ideas is that they "remain on paper for too long". From there, Mr. Le expressed his opinion: "The important issue is when to do it, if the planning is finished and then left there, it is a sin for the people". Sharing the same concern, Mr. Ha Mai wondered: "Can we prioritize the development of a waterway connecting boulevard first? Waterways can be operated immediately, but riverside roads will have to wait longer and especially worry about capital increase".

Speaking to Thanh Nien, Mr. Tran Quang Lam affirmed: "Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces are implementing the planning perspective of expanding the connection space, not only convenient connection in terms of traffic but also opening up potential for economic and tourism development, bringing many advantages of the Southeast region associated with the characteristics of rivers".

The idea of connecting the Saigon riverside boulevard is a hopeful and worth-waiting idea.
