Big4 banks account for nearly half
According to the individual financial reports of the third quarter of 2025 and the announcements of the banks, the number of bank transaction points (including branches/transaction offices) in the first 9 months of 2025 of 5 commercial banks recorded a decrease, including: VietinBank (decreased by 72 transaction offices), VCBNeo (decreased by 26), SCB (decreased by 19), Sacombank (decreased by 11) and GPBank (decreased by 5).
On the contrary, 6 banks recorded an increase in the number of banking transaction points, led by MB with 18 transaction points, VIB (up 14), HDBank (up 7), VietABank (up 2),ACB and Techcombank each increased 1 transaction point compared to December 31, 2024.
The Big 4 banking group leads in the number of branches/transaction offices nationwide. As of September 30, Agribank , BIDV, VietinBank and Vietcombank are maintaining more than 5,000 branches/transaction offices, equivalent to 48% of the total number of transaction points in the industry. This figure does not include headquarters and representative offices.
Specifically, the number of Vietcombank branches/transaction offices as of September 30 was 640; of which, the number of branches was 130, a decrease of 1 branch compared to the end of last year.
The distribution map shows that Vietcombank has the largest presence in Ho Chi Minh City (154 transaction offices) and Hanoi (94 transaction offices). This is the bank with the lowest number of branches/transaction offices among the four state-owned commercial banks.
Meanwhile, the total number of branches/transaction offices of VietinBank as of September 30 was 1,038, including 157 branches and 881 transaction offices.
Compared to December 31, 2024, the number of branches remains the same, but VietinBank has closed up to 72 transaction offices in the first 3 quarters of the year, becoming the most aggressive bank in the industry in stopping the operation of transaction points.
At BIDV, the total number of branches/transaction offices nationwide as of September 30 was 1,117 (including 187 branches, 930 transaction offices). Although the total number remained unchanged compared to the end of last year, BIDV actually stopped operating 2 branches and added 2 transaction offices in the first 3 quarters of the year.
In the Big4 group, Agribank leads in terms of nationwide network of operations, consistent with the characteristics of a bank with strengths in lending in the fields of agriculture, farmers and rural areas.
Although the third quarter financial report has not been announced, according to updated data in the parent bank's second quarter financial report, Agribank has 2,222 domestic transaction points, including 938 branches (level I and level II) and 1,284 transaction offices.
Private sector: LPBank is nearly double that of VPBank and Techcombank
Looking at private commercial banks, LPBank is the bank with the largest number of transaction points with 566 branches/transaction offices nationwide.
Surprisingly, despite cutting nearly 1,800 employees in the first three quarters of the year, the number of LPBank transaction points remained unchanged.
In addition, the transaction network of the bank chaired by Mr. Nguyen Duc Thuy also has 512 Post Office Transaction Offices, located at post offices nationwide. This network contributes to supporting LPBank in realizing its ambition of becoming the No. 1 retail bank in rural areas and urban areas of type 2 in the period 2025-2028.
Despite a decrease of 11 transaction offices in the first 9 months of the year, Sacombank still ranks second after LPBank in terms of the number of transaction points, 535 branches/transaction offices.
Next are ACB (389), HDBank (375), MB (328), Techcombank (300), VPBank (287), MSB (260), Eximbank (215), Vikki Bank (212), VIB (202)...
The remaining banks have less than 200 branches/transaction offices. Even VietABank, PGBank, Saigonbank, GPBank, NCB, VCBNeo, Bac A Bank, SCB, BaoViet Bank currently maintain less than 100 branches/transaction offices.
With SCB Bank and 4 mandatory transfer banks, Vikki Bank is maintaining 212 transaction offices and MBV is 101 transaction offices, unchanged in the number of transaction points compared to the end of last year.
Meanwhile, the number of VCBNeo transaction points decreased sharply by 26 points, to 66 points; GPBank slightly decreased from 85 to 80 transaction offices.
Saigon Commercial Joint Stock Bank (SCB) also reduced 19 transaction points, after reducing more than 100 transaction points in the previous 2 years.
Up to now, SCB only maintains 49 transaction offices, a decrease of 76% compared to 207 transaction offices before the Van Thinh Phat scandal.
