Delegates view the photo exhibition "Southern Vietnam".

Few would have guessed that next to Can Tho City General Hospital, there used to be a 600-meter-long canal connecting to the Can Tho River. This tranquil canal was lined with ancient trees casting their shadows, and small boats with curved roofs moored along its banks. Even fewer know that where the Cai Rang Bridge now spans the Can Tho River, there was once a gently sloping iron swing bridge connecting the two banks. Beside it were moored boats with roofs, and stilt houses on the river. And the Can Tho power plant and water plant, visible from the Khai Luong canal, still retain their traces today, only now with more modern embankments… Furthermore, the Can Tho District Court building, a bustling Chinese noodle shop in Can Tho in the past, and the vibrant river life on the Cai Con canal (Phung Hiep)… All of this is difficult to describe in words without the time-worn photographs presented at the "Southern Vietnam" exhibition. These photographs are vivid evidence of the development and urbanization process in Can Tho.

Similarly, the "Southern Vietnam" exhibition begins in Saigon – the capital of Southern Vietnam – with images of Bonnard (Le Loi) Boulevard and the Grand Theatre… Moving on to "My Tho Grand City," it reveals that a century ago it was already a major metropolis, bustling with trade and commerce, a prosperous city. Go Cong is equally vibrant, its story told through photographs of its main streets. In this way, the exhibition takes visitors through ancient lands, from Vinh Long , Tra Vang, Soc Trang, Chau Doc, Ha Tien, Rach Gia… telling the story of the land and people of each place through centuries-old black-and-white photographs.

The "Southern Vietnam" photo exhibition is therefore not just a display of photographs, but a journey back to the past, to see what each region was like in the past, and to better understand what exists today. Furthermore, the value of the "Southern Vietnam" exhibition lies in helping viewers recognize the law of development: every city, every region, passes through layers of time's sediment, where the past doesn't disappear but silently transforms in the present. Canals have been filled in, bridges have been replaced, streets have become bustling and modern… all contribute to the beautiful urban memory and heritage.
