Mourinho ended a disappointing season with Benfica. |
Jose Mourinho endured a forgettable night with Benfica amidst a heated debate surrounding his future in Europe. In the early hours of May 12th at the Da Luz stadium, Benfica drew 2-2 with SC Braga in a crucial match for qualification for next season's Champions League.
Benfica currently sit third, two points behind Sporting Lisbon with only one round remaining. Sporting will host Gil Vincente at home and only need a draw to secure a place in the Champions League qualifiers.
This result leaves Benfica with virtually no chance of qualifying for the Champions League, and adds further pressure on Mourinho at a time when he is constantly being linked with the managerial position at Real Madrid.
Benfica dominated for much of the first half but lacked sharpness in their finishing. Andreas Schjelderup missed a golden opportunity, while Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek made several saves for the visitors.
Things exploded at the start of the second half when Rafa Silva opened the scoring after just 30 seconds from an assist by Gianluca Prestianni. However, Braga immediately responded with a precise header from Pau Victor right after the kickoff.
The atmosphere on the pitch became increasingly tense as Benfica repeatedly protested against the referee. VAR disallowed Vangelis Pavlidis' goal because the ball went out of bounds before the assist. Pushing forward aggressively at the end of the match, Benfica left gaps in their defense and paid the price with a spectacular long-range strike from Jean-Baptiste Gorby of Braga.
Despite Pavlidis equalizing 2-2 from the penalty spot in injury time after VAR further intervention, Benfica could not be satisfied with the result. A season full of expectations for Mourinho at Da Luz is in danger of ending in disappointment.
