FIFA no longer considers MU or Liverpool as Club World Cup champions. |
FIFA has officially recognized Chelsea as the first Club World Cup champions in history. This means that the three Premier League giants have been removed from the list of clubs that have won the world championship.
The 2025 Club World Cup will take place in a completely new format, with 32 teams from 6 continents, following the same format as the World Cup at the national level. And with this major change, FIFA considers Chelsea the first club to win the "real Club World Cup".
In contrast, previous Premier League champions such as MU (2008), Liverpool (2019), or Man City (2023) will only be called "FIFA Intercontinental Champions". If counting the old version, Real Madrid has the most titles (5 times), then Barcelona (3 times).
According to the Daily Mail , this is how FIFA differentiates between the old format (including 6-7 teams) and the new expanded tournament. FIFA still uses the name Club World Cup for both, but from now on only Chelsea will be recognized as "true world champions".
"Ironically, this makes the titles of the former champions 'no longer world champions' - according to FIFA's point of view. A new gold list was born, with only one name recognized, the rest are former champions whose names were changed," Sportbible wrote.
The Club World Cup will return in 2029, with PSG, Pyramids, Al Hilal and Cruz Azul among the early favourites. Meanwhile, clubs and fans alike will likely debate FIFA’s decision.
On July 14, Chelsea beat PSG 3-0 in the 2025 Club World Cup final in New Jersey (USA), thanks to a double from Cole Palmer and a goal from Joao Pedro.
