Closing the 90 minutes at Chonburi Stadium (Thailand) on the evening of December 5, Huynh Nhu and her teammates poured in a rain of goals against the opponent rated lowest in Group B. This result was considered a strong response from the champion to their "arch-rival" Thailand. In the opening match of the women's football event of the 33rd SEA Games on December 4, host Thailand defeated the naturalized team of Indonesia with a score of 8-0, as a warning to the teams of Vietnam, the Philippines and Myanmar in the remaining groups.
Diverse gameplay
The big win on the evening of December 5 was also part of coach Mai Duc Chung’s strategic calculations. The Vietnamese women’s team’s group featured two physically strong and rapidly improving opponents, the Philippines and Myanmar, forcing the team to take full advantage of scoring opportunities against Malaysia to gain an advantage in the race for the top spot in the group.
The opening match of Group B of SEA Games 33 was a perfect opening for the Vietnamese women's team. Right from the first minutes, Hai Yen opened the scoring party with a precise rebound. The early goal was the catalyst for Vietnam's attack to explode.
Facing an opponent with many naturalized players but a loose organization, coach Mai Duc Chung and his team deployed a diverse, smooth and fast playing style. Sometimes the team flexibly attacked the flanks, sometimes decisively penetrated the center, and daring long-range shots were continuously launched.
Young faces like Nguyen Thi Hoa, Hai Linh and Thanh Nha did not hesitate to try their hand from the second line, causing the Malaysian defense to always be in a state of alarm. Hai Linh and then Thai Thi Thao concretized that confidence with cool finishing shots.
In particular, Thai Thi Thao's performance in the second half really made an impression. Within just 15 minutes of being put on the field, this midfielder played like a "possessed person", scoring 3 goals in a row. The remaining goals belonged to Bich Thuy, Hai Linh and a double from Hai Yen.

Luggage for the future
This resounding victory is not only about points. It is also a valuable test for the young players that coach Mai Duc Chung is gradually giving opportunities to.
Names like Cu Thi Huynh Nhu, Nguyen Thi Hoa and Minh Chuyen have been able to blend into the tournament's rhythm, playing steadily alongside experienced seniors like Bich Thuy and Hai Yen.
SEA Games is always the place where the Vietnamese women's team affirms its position as the number one team in the region. But in the journey to maintain the top position, succession is very important. The enthusiastic steps and bold moves of the new generation of players today are the foundation for the team to continue to fly high when the senior generation like Huynh Nhu gradually passes the peak of their career and needs the younger generation to take over.
In the early match in the same group, Myanmar surprisingly defeated the Philippines with a score of 2-1, creating more drama in the race for the top spot in Group B. However, with an outstanding goal difference and high morale after the opening match, the Vietnamese women's team holds a big advantage before facing the Philippines on December 8.
A jubilant start, a strong affirmation: the women's football champion is still here, ready to defend the SEA Games "throne".
