The hot dry season is long, electricity bills are high

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên23/03/2024

On March 23, in Can Tho City, the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) coordinated with the Vietnam Television Center in the Southwest region (VTV Can Tho) to organize a dialogue with the topic "Electricity supply in hot season".

According to Associate Professor Dr. Le Anh Tuan, former Deputy Director of the Institute of Climate Change Research at Can Tho University - a guest of the program, the dry season tends to last longer. Currently, daytime temperatures in some places on the streets reach 35 - 36 0 C, UV rays in the air are very high. The hot weather can last until the end of April, and the first rains of the season will cool the weather in May. However, people in the Mekong Delta have to wait until mid-May to really enter the rainy season.

In response to this forecast, Mr. Bui Quoc Hoan, Deputy General Director of EVNSPC, said that Vietnam Electricity (EVN) and the National Power System Dispatch Center (EVNNLDC) have developed many response scenarios, synchronously implementing all stages from power sources, transmission, distribution, and retail to customers. The storage of reserve water sources at hydroelectric reservoirs is optimized; at the same time, ensuring water supply to downstream areas for people's daily life and irrigation. Thermal power plants have sufficient fuel (coal, gas, oil), ready for operation. The increase and decrease in electricity load in each locality is also closely monitored to ensure the supply of electricity, without interrupting production.

According to Mr. Hoan, prolonged heat increases electricity consumption. This may cause localized electricity overload in some areas. However, people can rest assured because with the current level and technology of the electricity industry. All situations can be promptly resolved and customers will be notified to proactively respond. If there are no extreme situations or overlapping incidents, the power supply in 2024 will be guaranteed.

Talking via the hotline, the audience wondered why the electricity bill increased during the hot season even though the time and frequency of use remained the same. Regarding this issue, Mr. Hoan said that the main reason for the increase in electricity bills was due to increased electricity. The reason for the increase in electricity mainly comes from cooling devices, especially air conditioners. According to statistics, air conditioners account for about 35 - 65% of the total electricity consumption of families during the hot season. What few people know and need to note is that although the same temperature is turned on, if it is hot outside, the electricity consumption of the air conditioner will be higher than when the weather is cool. If people reduce the temperature by 10C in different weather conditions, the electricity consumption of this device can differ by 2 - 3%, causing the electricity bill to increase.

Prolonged heat causes high demand for electricity

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Le Anh Tuan, the climate change situation is increasingly complicated, the flow is changing, the operation of hydropower plants is forecasted to face difficulties in the future. It is time for people to consider supporting and alternative energy sources to hydropower. Especially taking advantage of the abundant sunshine and wind in the Mekong Delta. Recently, the installation of solar power systems on the roof has been applied by many people and shown significant efficiency.

Sharing more, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Toan, Deputy Director of Hau Giang Department of Industry and Trade, recommended that people implement many fundamental solutions to use electricity reasonably and save electricity during the hot season. That is to choose to buy devices with energy-saving labels; use LED lighting systems instead of incandescent lights; regularly check and replace wires to avoid heat-generating degradation. In particular, it is advisable to turn on the air conditioner from 26 0 C or higher to reduce power consumption and limit the use of unnecessary devices during peak hours.
