The island nation began battling severe weather last week. The situation worsened after heavy rains on Thursday left homes, fields and roads completely submerged, and triggered landslides across the country.

More than 25 people were killed in landslides on Thursday in the mountainous tea-growing regions of Badulla and Nuwara Eliya, about 300 kilometers (186 miles) east of the capital Colombo. Another 21 people were reported missing and more than a dozen injured, according to the country’s disaster management center.
