According to information from Lai Chau Provincial Police, from the night of May 19 to early morning of May 20, due to the impact of moderate to very heavy rain, at Km25+300 National Highway 4D (in Hong Thu village, Lan Nhi Thang commune, Phong Tho district), a serious landslide occurred, causing the road surface to sink and collapse, posing a high risk of traffic accidents.
National Highway 4D is a route about 160km long, connecting Phong Tho district (Lai Chau province) through Sa Pa town to Lao Cai city and continuing to Muong Khuong border gate (Lao Cai province).
To ensure safety and serve the construction and troubleshooting, Lai Chau Provincial Police immediately deployed forces to organize traffic flow at three points: Km25+300 National Highway 4D, Muong So intersection (Phong Tho district) and Sung Phai intersection (Lai Chau city).

Accordingly, authorities have instructed vehicles from Lai Chau City to Phong Tho and vice versa to move along Provincial Road 130 to avoid landslide areas.
People need to follow traffic flow instructions, not enter dangerous areas without permission, and closely monitor weather warnings.
According to rain gauge data from the Vrain system, from 7 p.m. on May 19 to the morning of May 20, the three localities with the highest rainfall in the country were: Ha Giang 156.4mm; Lai Chau 143.2mm; Yen Bai 76.6mm. These are mountainous areas with steep terrain, prone to flash floods and landslides when heavy rain lasts for a long time.
