On July 18, Reuters news agency quoted a senior US official as saying that the US Department of Commerce plans to issue restrictive regulations on cars with data connections using software from China and countries considered by the US to be rivals.
The range will include cars with built-in devices and software that allow drivers to access the internet and have the ability to share data with other devices inside and outside the vehicle.
"We are only focusing on some components and software, not the entire vehicle. However, there will be some important devices that control the vehicle that must be manufactured in an allied country. These are devices that have the function of managing software and data on the vehicle," said Mr. Alan Estevez, Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security.

Senior US officials are concerned that if cars know too much about their users because they are equipped with many devices and software that collect data, connect to smartphones, have the ability to take photos, control the steering system, know where users go, who they call... then it could be a serious threat.
According to Reuters, Mr. Estevez's comments clearly show the US administration's plans for vehicles related to China, which have caused many concerns.
Earlier in May, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said the agency planned to issue regulations on Chinese data-connected cars.
The administration of US President Joe Biden could take strong action, even banning these vehicles or imposing restrictions after investigating the national security risks of imported Chinese cars.
For its part, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has called on the US to respect the rules of the market economy and the principles of fair competition. It also argues that Chinese cars are popular globally because they have escaped fierce market competition and have many innovations in technology.
In fact, the US imports very few cars from China. Starting August 1, the US government is expected to continue to increase tariffs on electric vehicles and electric vehicle-related products such as batteries or chips originating from China.
