In August 2023, Ajun (name changed by Chinese media) - a 15-year-old male student living in Guilin city, Guangxi province, China - was discovered stealing 3,500 yuan (nearly 13 million VND) from a car parked on the side of the road.
After being caught stealing, Ajun was sent to Yongqing Reformatory School for training and rehabilitation, at the request of local authorities to his family. This was considered a punishment for Ajun, he was not brought to trial because he was still a minor.
“My son was just a little naughty, but at that time, he was in puberty with many rebellious traits. When I sent him to the reform school, I thought this would help him learn a lesson,” said his father, Jiang Peifeng.
However, just a few weeks after Ajun entered the reform school, a supervisor surnamed Du punished Ajun and some of his classmates by making them put their hands behind their heads and stand up and sit down repeatedly. Ajun was required to do this 1,000 times in a row. He did the required number of times in about an hour.
After serving his disciplinary sentence, Ajun said he was shaking so much he could barely stand. In the days that followed, he noticed blood in his urine and his legs began to swell.
However, Ajun continued to study, train and live according to the schedule in the reform school, even though his body was increasingly falling into a state of severe fatigue.
The total cost of treatment for Ajun to help him overcome his health incident was nearly 1 million yuan (more than 3.6 billion VND) (Photo: SCMP).
On September 13, 2023, Mr. Jiang received a call from Vinh Chau Central Hospital informing him that his son was in critical condition and needed to be transferred immediately.
When he arrived, Mr. Jiang was shocked to see his son's swollen body. Ajun was diagnosed with severe kidney failure and needed a kidney transplant. In June 2024, Ajun successfully received a kidney transplant.
To save his son, Mr. Jiang had to sell his house and borrow another 450,000 yuan, the total cost of Ajun's treatment was nearly 1 million yuan (more than 3.6 billion VND). The father said: "I just hope my son can continue to live, even if I have to go bankrupt."
In June 2024, Mr. Jiang decided to sue Yongqing Reformatory School, demanding compensation and a public apology from the school to his family.
In March this year, the lawsuit took a new turn. The medical experts who were invited to give their opinions on Ajun's health in the lawsuit gave their official opinions.
The team of experts determined that Ajun's health had seriously deteriorated, a direct result of the severe physical punishment he had been subjected to at the reform school.
Experts also determined that Ajun's health was permanently affected, specifically, he suffered a decline in his ability to work throughout his life.
Recently, the People's Court of Vinh Chau City officially brought the case to trial. The case is attracting the attention of the Chinese online community.
Many people expressed outrage at the punishment that the warden, surnamed Du, once applied to Ajun. “Even a special forces soldier cannot stand up and sit down 1,000 times in a row, let alone an ordinary teenager. The warden is too cruel,” one netizen said.
However, many other netizens also believe that this story is a lesson in family education . Children need to be taught by their parents early on how to recognize their limits, how to protect themselves, and how to seek help when necessary.
For example, in Ajun's story, he had the right and needed courage to say no to the harsh, even cruel, punishment given by the supervisor.
