Young man in Ho Chi Minh City has monkeypox

VnExpressVnExpress01/10/2023

Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control announced that a 34-year-old man has monkeypox, with no recent contact with foreigners or travel abroad.

On October 1, a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC) said that the patient, residing in Binh Chanh, came to the Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital for examination with suspected signs of the disease. The hospital took a sample and sent it to the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City for testing, the result was positive for monkeypox, on September 29. The patient is being isolated and treated.

This is the 5th case of monkeypox in Vietnam.

HCDC investigated the patient's travel history and compiled a list of people who had close contact with the patient within 21 days before the onset of the disease. People who had close contact with the patient self-monitored their health at home for 21 days and notified the health station if they had symptoms of suspected illness. Currently, these people are in normal health and have not shown any signs of illness.

People living with the patient are instructed to disinfect their home and personal belongings. The health sector continues to investigate the epidemic and monitor the health of the patient and those in contact.

Last week, a 25-year-old man, temporarily residing in Ho Chi Minh City, was diagnosed with monkeypox. The patient is currently being isolated and treated, and his health is stable. His girlfriend, who lives in Binh Duong , also contracted the disease. The remaining contacts have not shown any signs of the disease. Both patients have not traveled abroad or had contact with foreigners in the past 21 days (incubation period).

Currently, the source of infection for recent cases is unknown.

Medical experts say the locally transmitted monkeypox cases prove that the disease has entered Vietnam and is circulating in the community, amid a sharp increase in new cases in Thailand and China.

HCDC recommends that people who discover that they or someone around them has symptoms of suspected illness should immediately go to a medical facility for consultation, diagnosis and proper treatment. Sick people need to strictly follow the instructions of medical staff in treatment, reduce complications as well as strictly implement infection prevention measures. Sick people need to coordinate communication with those in close contact with them to detect symptoms early and prevent the spread.

Monkeypox is transmitted from person to person through close contact with a person with monkeypox rash, including through face-to-face, skin-to-skin, mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-skin contact, including sexual intercourse. People with symptoms of an acute rash of unknown cause accompanied by one or more suspicious symptoms such as fever above 38 degrees Celsius, swollen lymph nodes (lymph nodes), headache, muscle pain, back pain, weakness, should proactively contact a medical facility for timely monitoring and advice. At the same time, they should proactively self-isolate and avoid sexual intercourse.

Avoid close contact with people with monkeypox. Avoid direct contact with wounds, body fluids, droplets and objects and utensils contaminated with the pathogen. In case there is someone in your home or workplace who is infected or suspected of being infected, you need to notify the health authority for timely advice and treatment, do not self-treat.

The monkeypox outbreak began in May 2022, appearing in countries where the virus had never circulated before, such as the US, UK, Sweden, Belgium, Thailand, India, Spain, etc. To date, the world has recorded more than 90,000 cases of monkeypox, most of whom are young men, most of whom have homosexual sex. On July 23, 2022, WHO declared monkeypox an international public health emergency, classified as a dangerous infectious disease.

Currently, Vietnam does not have a vaccine or specific medicine for monkeypox, only a smallpox vaccine. The Ministry of Health has classified monkeypox as a group B infectious disease, a dangerous infectious disease that can spread quickly and cause death.
