Improving English proficiency for students

Universities in Da Nang are implementing solutions to improve the quality of English teaching and learning, gradually building a bilingual academic environment to meet the requirements of integration.

From the playing field to integration

In concretizing the spirit of Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW of the Politburo on breakthroughs in education development, which aims to make English the second language in schools, many universities in the city regularly organize English competitions with the desire to improve students' foreign language skills in conjunction with training high-quality human resources for the universities.

Among them, the BK English 2025 competition organized by the University of Technology (Da Nang University) stands out, attracting the attention of a large number of students. Truong Thi Ngoc Huyen, a student from the Faculty of Information Technology, shared: “Participating in English speaking competitions helps me become more confident in communication, presentations, and teamwork. It also provides a motivating environment to learn English proactively, which will benefit my studies and future career.”

According to Associate Professor Huynh Phuong Nam, Vice Rector of the University of Technology, in the context of increasingly deep international integration, students not only need to be proficient in their majors but also need to have strong foreign language skills. The university regularly organizes practical academic activities, encouraging students to hone their skills, enhance practice, and spread the movement of learning English. This is also an advantage for students to proactively seize learning, research, and self-development opportunities.

From academic English competitions at all levels, university students in the city are increasingly demonstrating confidence, creativity, and integration. Recently, at the national English competition “Star Awards 2025” held at Thai Nguyen University (Thai Nguyen province) with the theme “The Role of Generation Z in Innovative Thinking and Integration (Generation Z: Voices on the Future)”, the Novaz team representing the Da Nang cluster, consisting of 3 students from Da Nang University – Dinh Nhu Duy Tue, University of Technology; Tran Tuan Anh, University of Education; and Tran Thuy Tien, University of Foreign Languages ​​– won second prize overall.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thanh Dat, Secretary of the Youth Union of Da Nang University, academic English-language competitions contribute to discovering and nurturing talented English speakers at universities, spreading and inspiring the cultivation of English skills. This is also key for students to integrate internationally and become global citizens.

Enhance teaching in English.

Beyond simply creating English-speaking spaces, many universities in the city are implementing programs taught entirely in English.

The Vietnam-Korea University of Information and Communication Technology (University of Da Nang) proactively innovates its training activities towards standardization, internationalization, and practical application, with bilingual programs. These include programs taught entirely in English, a business semester model, and international exchange and internship programs. Notably, all students are required to complete their graduation thesis in English, demonstrating the university's commitment to international integration.

Recently, through a collaboration with Nottingham Trent University (UK), the Vietnam-UK Institute for Research and Training (Da Nang University) launched a Master's program in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) in a joint training format. This program provides a foundation of knowledge and skills for students to become English teachers, interns, researchers, and graduate thesis holders, who will receive a degree awarded by the partner institution.

Associate Professor Dr. Doan Ngoc Phi Anh, Vice Rector of the University of Economics (Da Nang University), stated that the university is currently implementing three full-time English-language training programs (Foreign Trade, Digital Marketing, and E-commerce) and 18 part-time English-language specialized training programs. The training program content is developed and updated with advanced knowledge, ensuring compliance with the National Curriculum Framework, and includes participation from international lecturers and lecturers who have trained abroad. Student exchange and internship programs with universities and businesses worldwide also contribute to providing opportunities for students to improve their foreign language skills.

In Conclusion No. 45-TB/TGV of the Central Steering Committee on Science, Technology Development, Innovation and Digital Transformation, the University of Da Nang was identified as one of four universities nationwide selected for key investment, building a model for the Vietnamese higher education system in the period 2026-2030. This includes the goal of ensuring that at least 60% of training programs in science, engineering, and technology fields are taught in English; and prioritizing degree-granting partnerships with universities ranked in the top 200 worldwide.

To achieve this goal, Da Nang University proactively strengthens cooperation with major universities such as the National University of Singapore, the University of Sydney, etc., to establish joint degree programs; exchange lecturers and students in both directions; co-supervise doctoral and master's students; and organize international scientific conferences to develop research and academic networks.
