Overview of the workshop.
Overview of the workshop.

Dai An Temple is a sacred ancient temple located on the banks of the Red River. For a long time, this place has been known as the religious center of the local people, preserving many unique cultural and historical values of the land of Mau A.

The temple worships the Three Gods: Son Tinh, Cao Son, and Quy Minh Dai Vuong, the gods symbolizing the strength, wisdom, and courage of the Vietnamese people; and also worships Mau Thuong Ngan, the Mother of the mountains and forests - the embodiment of compassion, tolerance, and protection of nature.

Not only a sacred place, Dai An Temple is also associated with a steadfast revolutionary tradition. During the years of resistance against colonialism, this place was an important revolutionary base, a gathering point for forces and food for the Song Thao campaign, contributing to the glorious victory of the nation.

The temple was ranked as a provincial historical and cultural relic in 2013. This is a worthy recognition of the historical, cultural and spiritual values that the relic preserves.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Ha Duc Anh, Party Secretary, Chairman of Mau A Commune People's Council affirmed: "Dai An Temple is not only a historical-cultural relic, but also a symbol of patriotism, solidarity, resilience, and loyalty of Mau A people. However, over time and historical changes, despite many restorations, the scale, landscape and facilities of Dai An Temple are still modest, not commensurate with its inherent value and stature."

Therefore, in the new context, when cultural preservation is closely linked with sustainable socio -economic development, the planning, construction, upgrading and restoration of Dai An Temple is an urgent and legitimate requirement, aiming to preserve and honor the value of national cultural heritage, affirming the identity of Mau A homeland. This is also a task that is both cultural and long-term strategic in developing the local cultural-spiritual space.

According to Mr. Ha Duc Anh, the restoration and upgrading must preserve the original character and spirit of the relic. All new items need to be carefully studied in terms of feng shui, terrain, and temple direction to ensure harmony between heaven, earth, and human. In addition, the choice of temple construction direction must ensure harmony between tradition and the times, in order to continue to affirm the inherent spiritual position, maintain the feng shui position that converges the source of vitality, light, longevity, and development.

Mr. Ha Duc Anh, Party Secretary, Chairman of Mau A Commune People's Council spoke.

“Dai An Temple needs to become a cultural convergence center of the Red River region, a place where tradition and modernity, beliefs and people's lives intersect. The planning should not stop at architectural renovation, but should be expanded into a vibrant cultural space - where people and tourists can experience, learn, feel and preserve the folk cultural values of Mau,” Mr. Ha Duc Anh emphasized.

The workshop "Planning the location, direction of construction, upgrading, restoration and renovation of Dai An temple, Mau A commune, Lao Cai province" was organized as a necessary step, demonstrating the spirit of democracy, objectivity and openness to ensure that when Dai An temple is renovated and restored, it will retain its original identity, promote its cultural-historical-spiritual values, and at the same time become a typical cultural and tourist highlight of the locality in the new period.

At the workshop, delegates, experts and researchers made many contributions on a number of key contents in planning orientation, architecture, construction direction and preservation of spiritual values of Dai An temple relic.

Mr. Chu Chinh Son, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Mau A commune spoke.

Mr. Chu Chinh Son, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Mau A commune, proposed two main options for delegates to analyze the advantages and limitations:

Option 1 is to keep the temple's current orientation (Northeast). The advantage of this option is to open the main axis of the temple to the Red River, ensuring favorable feng shui factors, expanding the landscape space, creating conditions for traffic and tourism development, contributing to connecting the religious and cultural space of the upper Red River. However, the disadvantage is that the traffic route in front of the land is in the urban development planning, so in the future when the urban area is formed and construction works are completed, the view from the temple to the Red River will be limited.

Option 2 is to adjust the temple's direction according to the new landscape axis of the planning area (South). The advantage of this option is to take advantage of the old entrance gate, saving on infrastructure while retaining the original historical and cultural elements. However, the disadvantage is that the temple no longer retains its original direction, which somewhat reduces the original value of the relic.

Regarding scale and design, the project is implemented on an area of over 6,500m2 . The main temple is built in imitation of Dong Cuong temple - the symbol of the former Van Yen region, but with adjustments suitable for the local scale.

Professor, Dr. Bui Quang Thanh contributed comments.

Most of the opinions exchanged at the workshop leaned towards the option of keeping the temple's current orientation to ensure the original elements of the relic.

Professor, Dr. Bui Quang Thanh, Senior Researcher at the Vietnam Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism, said: "To preserve heritage, we currently have three main viewpoints: preserving the original state, selective preservation and preservation in development. There are relics that were formed hundreds of years ago, and are still small in scale, while the cultural and religious needs of the community today have changed. In the case of Dai An temple, we should approach conservation in development, to both meet the spiritual life of the people and serve the goal of sustainable economic and cultural development."

According to Professor, Dr. Bui Quang Thanh, Mau A commune needs to research and develop a strategy for developing spiritual cultural tourism, with Dai An temple as the core, because this place plays a central role connecting with many other famous spiritual relics. Mau A possesses rich natural and human resources, with sufficient conditions to form unique tourism products.

Meritorious Artist Dang Ngoc Anh, head of Dai An Temple, speaks.

History professor Le Van Lan noted that the legal basis for the restoration and renovation of temples should be based on the records of the relics' ranking. In addition, there should be more research, connection, and additional data on the relics to enrich the heritage value and raise the relics' ranking.

Mr. Duong Tuan Nghia, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lao Cai province, emphasized that in the process of restoring and building the temple, according to the Law on Cultural Heritage, it is necessary to preserve and respect the original values of the relic. The Department strongly supports the conservation associated with development to promote the value of the relic, turning heritage into assets, making Dai An temple a spiritual destination to attract tourists.

Meritorious Artisan Dang Ngoc Anh, head of Dai An Temple, expressed his wish that the temple will be upgraded, restored, and renovated in a truly scientific and reasonable manner to create a solemn and warm worship space, a place of worship for many people.
