Enhancing the value of fruit trees

Thanh Hoa province has diverse natural conditions and a favorable climate for the development of many types of fruit trees such as oranges, pomelos, guavas, dragon fruit, pineapples, etc. In recent years, localities in the province have focused on expanding the area of fruit trees towards commercial production, gradually forming concentrated specialized farming areas; standardizing production processes associated with the development of OCOP products... contributing to increasing the value of fruit trees.

Enhancing the value of fruit trees

Area of fruit trees grown according to VietGAP standards in Van Du commune.

Currently, the province has approximately 25,000 hectares of fruit trees, of which more than 12,000 hectares are concentrated, with an average income of about 120 million VND/hectare/year for key crops such as pomelo, orange, guava, and pineapple. The province also has 7 fruit production areas including pomelo, lychee, dragon fruit, banana, and jackfruit that have been granted planting area codes.

In fruit-growing areas such as Van Du, Ngoc Lien, Xuan Binh, and Tho Xuan communes, people have actively applied scientific and technological advancements to improve productivity and product quality. Many methods have been implemented, including selecting superior fruit tree varieties, grafting to improve varieties, pruning to create new rootstocks, thinning to create airy canopies, stimulating flowering at the right time, and fruit bagging techniques to reduce pests and diseases. Along with this, people have boldly adopted safe production processes according to VietGAP and organic standards, used water-saving irrigation systems, managed pests and diseases using biological methods, proactively introduced new high-yield, high-quality varieties into production, gradually replacing older, less efficient varieties, and developed OCOP products. As a result, fruit quality has significantly improved, with more attractive packaging, meeting the increasingly high demands of the market. In Lam Son commune, Mr. Do Van Tho, who has been involved with Luan Van pomelo trees for many years, said: “My family has about 200 pomelo trees. To ensure the trees produce large, beautifully colored fruit with a distinctive aroma, I have improved the orchard, arranged the planting distances appropriately, and ensured good ventilation to minimize pests and diseases; making care easier and installing a water-saving irrigation system. Along with that, I use organic and microbial fertilizers; apply sprinkler irrigation to provide even water supply to the trees, which is effective during the flowering and fruiting stages; and combine this with soluble fertilizers to help the trees absorb nutrients better, reduce fertilizer loss, and increase yield.”

Along with the application of science and technology to enhance the value of fruit trees, participation in the OCOP program, brand building, traceability, and product promotion are receiving special attention from localities. Some fruit products protected by intellectual property rights, such as Nhu Xuan sweet oranges, Tho Xuan pomelos, Van Du oranges, and Ba Thuoc tangerines, are sold on the market with higher value and economic efficiency than similar products. In addition, cooperatives and production groups are actively connecting with supermarkets, e-commerce platforms, and purchasing businesses to expand stable outlets for their products.

Mr. Chu Thanh Hai, Director of Thanh Cong Agricultural Production Cooperative in Xuan Binh commune, said: “Based on the potential and strengths of fruit tree development, we have developed OCOP products that meet 3-star standards such as Nhu Xuan pear guava, Xuan Hoa green pomelo, Xuan Hoa golden-fleshed orange, Xuan Hoa sweet orange... Currently, through intensive cultivation and seed selection, we have created superior varieties that produce fruit with a rich sweet taste, distinctive aroma, and beautiful color and appearance... To have a firm foothold in supermarkets and clean food stores and gain the trust of customers, the cooperative has continuously promoted the application of science and technology to improve productivity, quality, and appearance. The cooperative has installed a drip irrigation system around the base of the trees, using pressure-compensating valves, which is very suitable for hilly conditions, ensuring that each tree in the garden receives the same amount of water and can mix fertilizers to be delivered directly through this system. Along with that, we have applied advanced production processes such as seed selection.” High-quality seeds, produced according to VietGAP standards.

To enhance the value of fruit trees, localities in the province are continuing to overcome the fragmented and small-scale cultivation situation by consolidating and concentrating land, forming large-scale specialized fruit-growing areas; linking production to create sustainable production chains. In addition, they encourage people to change their production mindset, improve quality, and aim for high-quality standards such as VietGAP, GlobalGAP, and organic farming to meet the demands of discerning markets. At the same time, they encourage businesses to link production and cooperate closely with farmers to ensure a stable and high-quality supply; and invest in processing and preservation systems. To develop the consumer market, localities need to increase participation in trade fairs and exhibitions to introduce products; develop distribution channels, especially supermarket chains, clean agricultural product stores, and online sales channels.
