In Tuyen Quang, this program has created a large, sustainable raw material production area that is suitable for natural conditions from lowland to highland. Thousands of local workers have jobs and stable incomes since OCOP products have been accepted by the market.
In Xuan Van commune, there are currently nearly 900 hectares of grapefruit, of which more than 200 hectares are planted with Soi Ha grapefruit. This is a local specialty grapefruit product, cared for by people according to VietGAP and organic standards. In 2017, Soi Ha grapefruit was voted into the Top 10 famous brands and trademarks by the Vietnam Consumers Association. In 2021, it was granted a geographical indication certificate. In October 2024, Soi Ha grapefruit was officially exported to the UK market, one of the demanding markets with strict regulations. To achieve this, Soi Ha grapefruit passed 923 tests on pesticide residues and other harmful substances to health.
The family of Ms. Hoang Thi Hoa, Soi Ha village, Xuan Van commune is a household that participates in taking care of the grapefruit garden according to technical standards for export to the UK. With a total area of more than 3 hectares of Soi Ha grapefruit, for many years now, grapefruit trees have brought high income to the family, although the consumption market is only domestic. The fact that Soi Ha grapefruit of Xuan Van commune is exported to the UK has brought hope to her and the grapefruit growers here, because it not only enhances the brand of agricultural products but also helps people increase their income.
Ms. Hoa said that her family is currently taking care of the grapefruit garden organically, using biofertilizers and watering regularly. When the grapefruit enters the fruit development stage, the family uses lamps to trap insects, avoiding affecting the quality and appearance of the fruit. The process of harvesting grapefruit for export is done manually, cutting with scissors, not cutting close to the stem and only selecting fruits that meet the standards for packaging. With more than 3 hectares of Soi Ha grapefruit, after deducting expenses, her family earns about 500 million VND in profit each year.
Mr. Trieu Van Tuyen, Director of Xuan Van Agricultural and Forestry Cooperative, Tuyen Quang province, said: Soi Ha grapefruit selected for export has a Brix sweetness of 11.5 degrees or higher, peeled segments, juicy and not bitter, even yellow skin, few black spots and no freckles, no insect bites, weight from 1-1.2 kg/fruit and is tested for pesticide residues two weeks before harvest, has a certificate of meeting European residue standards. "In the coming time, we will continue to coordinate with specialized agencies of the province to organize training, promote science - technology and technology for grapefruit growing households to meet export criteria and standards. In particular, we will expand the raw material area to serve exports in 2025," Mr. Tuyen added.
Along with Soi Ha grapefruit products, six other OCOP agricultural products of Tuyen Quang province are exported to the UK, including: Guava tea, male papaya flowers soaked in honey of Binh Minh organic agricultural products cooperative, dried bananas of Chieu Yen clean banana cooperative, green-heart black bean tea bags of Hong Phat organic cooperative, lemon syrup and kumquat syrup of Minh Thao agricultural and medicinal products cooperative.
Mr. Nguyen The Hai, Director of Chieu Yen Clean Banana Cooperative said: “The cooperative’s banana products being exported to the UK is a great joy for us. This is not only a recognition of the cooperative’s collective efforts throughout the clean production process according to standards, but also a strong push to open the door to international market integration for Tuyen Quang agricultural products”.
From the initial success, the cooperative is building an additional processing factory with an area of over 300 m2, expanding the growing area according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, and equipping more modern machinery and equipment to improve production capacity, meeting the strict requirements of the export market. Currently, the cooperative's raw material area is about 10 hectares, with seven members and 20 workers working continuously, with an average salary of 7 million VND/person/month. In July 2025, the cooperative will continue to export 1,500 jars of dried bananas and 1,500 packages of crispy fried bananas according to the signed contract.
Through surveys of domestic and foreign markets, many units highly appreciated the quality of OCOP products of Tuyen Quang province. More than 50 specialty and key products have been introduced and sold in the European market and received positive feedback from customers. This is the initial result in the orientation of raising Tuyen Quang agricultural products to the international market.
Ms. Nguyen Thanh Huong, Director of RYB Joint Stock Company, Hanoi (a unit specializing in exporting agricultural products to international markets) said that Tuyen Quang's OCOP products are of good quality, produced from natural ingredients and retain their characteristic flavors, handcrafted by the hands of farmers in processing cooperatives. This is a great advantage for these products to access international markets, including demanding markets such as Europe, where consumers tend to prefer pre-processed products but of natural origin, good for health.
Director of the Department of Rural Development, Department of Agriculture and Environment Tran Hai Tuyen said: The OCOP program has helped entities raise awareness, comply with legal regulations on food safety conditions, production processes according to VietGAP standards, organic, environmental protection, use of packaging and labels in accordance with regulations. Thereby, creating stable jobs, increasing income for people, contributing to building new rural areas.
Up to now, the province has had 20 points of introduction and sale of OCOP products, the products are widely promoted on e-commerce platforms such as postmart.vn, santmdttuyenquang.gov.vn... The successful export of some OCOP products is the foundation for the provincial agricultural sector to build a strategy to develop key agricultural products, gradually affirming the brand and value of Tuyen Quang agricultural products in domestic and foreign markets. In the coming time, the sector will continue to promote production according to VietGAP, organic, GlobalGAP standards and ISO certification according to domestic and international standards.
It can be said that the OCOP program has created a new look, contributing to changing the face of the rural economy. Especially for highland localities, this is also an opportunity for local products to increase their value, gradually affirming their strengths in the consumer market ■
