If the younger brother in the legend did not take the gold, what would have happened to the story of "Eating the star fruit and paying with the gold"?

As a Vietnamese, everyone must know the fairy tale of Paying the Star Fruit in Gold. This December, Idecaf Drama Theater will introduce to the audience the new play, The Red Crow Spreads Its Wings, a play that features the story of Paying the Star Fruit in Gold.

The Red Crow Spreads Its Wings (author and director: Quang Thao) is a story both familiar and strange, inspired by the fairy tale "Eating a star fruit and paying back with gold".

Why are there two crows in The Golden Starfruit ?

The play begins on a luxury cruise ship for the rich. When the ship is hit by a big wave, the rich billionaire is pushed to a golden island. From then on, he plans to escape from the rescuers to stay and explore and want to control the golden island.

In a certain Ha village, there was a boy named Trong Duc who was said by the whole village to be crazy because he was stupid.

Trong Duc was conspired by his brother and his wife, Trong Nhan and Nhu Sen, to take his property and chase him out of the house with only a star fruit tree as his property.

According to the fairy tale, the younger brother had to meet a bird that came to eat star fruit and then carried the younger brother holding a three-span bag to get gold and become rich.

But in The Red Crow Spreads Its Wings, the younger brother decided to run away and not give the crow a chance to take him to get the gold. What made the younger brother do that is a long story for the audience to find the answer.

In the play, there is not just one crow but two. One is black and the other is pink, which also makes the audience curious. Crows, why are they pink, what does pink mean and how did the pink crow turn the familiar story upside down?

6 actors in the play

The Red Crow Spreads Its Wings has 6 actors. In this play, the theater's backstage is very strong because the work of changing the scenery is all given to the actors.

As Dinh Toan and Dai Nghia jokingly said, the director directed the actors in the play from beginning to end.

Each artist has to take on 2 or 3 roles. Dinh Toan has three roles: a doctor, a black crow, and a captain. My Duyen plays Miss Men, a pink crow, and a sugar baby.

Trinh Minh Dung plays the billionaire, Ky Du, the father. Dai Nghia is Trong Nhan, the sugar daddy. Thanh Thuy plays Nhu Sen, the alcoholic lady. Quang Thao is Trong Duc, a passenger on the ship.

Because each person has so many roles, they have to appear in almost every scene. If the scene emphasizes the roles of Dai Nghia and Thanh Thuy, the other actors will support, be background, and sometimes even… dance as illustrations.

And the same with others, rotating like that. This way of handling is quite strange and "tortures" the actors very effectively.

In a story that is both folk and modern, not bound by time and space, both fairy tale and… fantasy, The Red Crow Spreads Its Wings brings a rather strange color to Idecaf in the year-end drama season.

Whether this innovation is effective or not will probably have to wait for the audience's response at the first performance, December 7.

But after all, the play leaves in the hearts of the audience pondering, sometimes considered crazy and foolish by the world, but still living peacefully, serenely and happily. But cunning and competition can sometimes drive us crazy.
