New Zealand contributes NZD 1 million to help Vietnam recover from Typhoon Yagi


According to the New Zealand Embassy in Vietnam, the government of this country has just announced a contribution of 1 million New Zealand dollars (NZD) to support Vietnam's efforts to overcome the severe consequences of the storm. Yagi.

In the letter to the Vice Prime minister Minister Foreign Office Vietnam Bui Thanh Son today, New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Sir Winston Peters wrote: “Goverment New Zealand would like to express our deepest condolences to the victims of Typhoon Yagi in northern Vietnam. The thoughts of all New Zealanders are with those affected and the rescue workers on the frontline… New Zealand looks forward to leveraging the many aspects of our bilateral relationship to strengthen Vietnam’s future resilience and recovery from such devastating disasters.”

According to New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam, Ms. Caroline Beresford, as a strategic partner of Vietnam, New Zealand stands side by side with the Vietnamese government and people during this extremely difficult time.

“We hope our support will quickly reach those in need, contribute to emergency efforts and help affected communities rebuild their lives,” the Ambassador affirmed. 

Yagi was the strongest storm in the East Sea in 30 years and the strongest storm to make landfall in Vietnam in 70 years. The storm and its remnants caused havoc across northern Vietnam.

As of 15/9, there were 330 people reported dead or missing, and an estimated 800 people injured following widespread flooding, landslides, and fallen trees. Initial economic losses are estimated to have reached 40 trillion VND (1,6 billion USD).
